What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Consultant Breast Radiologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Consultant Breast Radiologist, you need comprehensive expertise in diagnostic radiology with specialized training in breast imaging, typically supported by a medical degree, radiology residency, and fellowship in breast imaging. Familiarity with advanced imaging technologies like mammography, ultrasound, MRI, and biopsy systems, along with board certification, is essential. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure accurate diagnosis, effective patient management, and collaboration with clinical teams, which are critical for optimal breast cancer care.

What are the most common challenges faced by Consultant Breast Radiologists in a multidisciplinary team setting?

Consultant Breast Radiologists often collaborate closely with surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, and nurses, which requires strong communication and coordination skills. One common challenge is ensuring timely and accurate sharing of imaging findings to support swift clinical decisions, especially in busy breast clinics or during multidisciplinary meetings. Navigating complex cases where imaging results are inconclusive also requires both technical expertise and collaborative problem-solving.

Job description

Job Description
The University of Virginia Health System (UVA Health) is seeking a fellowship-trained Breast Radiologist to join our Community Division. This position offers the opportunity to practice the full spectrum of musculoskeletal imaging in a collegial, supportive environment serving Prince William Hospital, Haymarket Medical Center and Gainesville Outpatient Imaging Center. The role combines the advantages of a dynamic community-based practice with the academic connection and resources of a nationally recognized university health system.
The successful candidate will devote approximately 90-95% effort to clinical service and 5-10% to administrative and service activities, with flexibility to adapt as the division evolves. Position is a hybrid model with coverage on-site for procedures and remote for screening mammography interpretations.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Interpret a comprehensive range of breast imaging studies, including Mammography, MRI and Ultrasound of the breasts.
  • Perform and interpret image-guided breast procedures, such as localizations and biopsies, as appropriate.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and provide consultative expertise for referring physicians and technical staff.
  • Collaborate closely with surgical oncologists, oncologists, primary care providers and pathologists to ensure the highest-value use of imaging studies.
  • Share in the division's clinical schedule.

Service & Administrative Responsibilities
  • Contribute to divisional quality improvement, workflow optimization, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Participate in peer review, protocol development, and marketing/recruitment efforts.
  • Work collaboratively with technologists, nurses, and administrative staff to ensure high-quality imaging protocols and timely service.
  • Support a culture of collegiality, inclusivity, and respect across the Division and UVA Health.
  • Help advance the professional reputation of UVA Radiology in the communities we serve.

Why Join UVA Health?
  • Practice a full range of breast imaging in a busy, high-quality community setting.
  • Access the expertise and resources of a top-ranked academic radiology department.
  • Work with dedicated colleagues in a supportive, team-oriented environment.
  • Live and practice in Northern Virginia, with proximity to Washington, D.C., while serving diverse and growing communities.

Qualifications
  • M.D. or D.O. degree; board certified/eligible in Diagnostic Radiology.
  • Fellowship training in Breast Imaging.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Strong clinical skills, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to patient-centered care.
