Job description

Traveling Superintendent — Retail Programs
Deacon Construction · Seattle, WA (Home Base) Full-Time
Deacon Construction is looking for an experienced Traveling Superintendent to join our Retail Programs team. This is a field leadership role for someone who thrives on the road, runs a tight job site in an active retail environment, and takes pride in delivering national retail construction projects on schedule and to our clients' high standards, including work for clients like Safeway, Walmart, Tesla, 5 Below, and many more.
WHO WE ARE
At Deacon, we believe that great projects are built by great people, and great people deserve a place where they are genuinely valued. Our focus is simple: put our people first, build excellent projects, and maintain the long-standing client relationships that have defined our reputation for over 45 years.
We work hard, take pride in what we build, and hold ourselves to a high standard. We also know that the best teams are the ones that enjoy showing up every day, which means taking time to connect, celebrate, and support one another, whether you're in the office or out in the field.
As we expand across the West and beyond, we are committed to maintaining the heart of who Deacon is: people who care about their work, their teams, and each other.
WHY JOIN DEACON?
  • People-first culture with mentorship, training, and real opportunities for advancement.
  • Meaningful field work on a growing portfolio of retail construction projects for national retail clients, including Safeway, Walmart, Tesla, 5 Below, and many more, across Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
  • Stability and growth: privately held, financially strong, and expanding for over 45 years.
  • Competitive travel package including per diem, lodging, and a vehicle allowance.
  • A team that works hard and takes care of each other in the field and at home.
  • Community involvement through our Deacon Charitable Foundation and Community Engagement Committee.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Traveling Superintendent on Deacon's Retail Programs team, you will lead field operations on retail construction and remodel projects for national retail clients across Washington and the surrounding Pacific Northwest, with Seattle, WA as your home base. Much of this work happens in active, occupied stores, so schedules shift project to project. Depending on the job, you may run a standard day shift or a night/off-hours shift to keep the work moving while keeping disruption to store operations and customers to a minimum. You will manage subcontractors, enforce quality and safety standards, and partner with the Project Manager to keep every project on schedule and on budget. You will represent Deacon in the field with client construction teams, store management, and trade partners, and you will set the standard for how we work.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead day-to-day field operations on retail construction and remodel projects for national retail clients, including Safeway, Walmart, Tesla, 5 Below, and many more, across Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
  • Manage subcontractors in the field, enforce schedules, and hold trade partners accountable to scope, quality, and safety.
  • Coordinate construction in active, occupied retail environments, running day shifts or night/off-hours shifts depending on the project, to minimize disruption to store operations and customers.
  • Partner closely with the Project Manager on scheduling, phased sequencing, look-ahead planning, RFI/submittal coordination, and cost control.
  • Conduct daily jobsite walks, maintain accurate daily logs, and lead subcontractor coordination meetings, including off-hours crews as needed.
  • Enforce Deacon's safety program and maintain a clean, compliant jobsite at all times, including adherence to client-specific site standards and program requirements.
  • Manage inspections, punch list execution, and project closeout to ensure a smooth turnover with minimal impact to store operations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with client construction and facilities teams, store management, and trade partners.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5 or more years of superintendent experience on commercial construction projects, with retail construction experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage construction in active or occupied retail environments, including phased scopes and coordination with on-site store operations.
  • Comfortable working either day shifts or night/off-hours shifts, depending on the project and client program.
  • Solid understanding of construction means and methods, scheduling, and field safety programs.
  • Excellent communicator and relationship builder comfortable working directly with store management, facilities teams, and client construction representatives.
  • Willing and able to travel extensively throughout Washington and the Pacific Northwest; home base in Seattle, WA.
  • Experience with Procore or similar project management tools is a plus.
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
