Job description

Dewberry's Daphne office is seeking a Construction Inspector / Manager to provide complete construction administration and inspection services for site civil construction activities including roadways, land development, and water and sewer utility projects. This position will often include resident inspection of projects for our public and private sector Clients. The position requires a general knowledge of site, roadway, and utility design and installation, proficient communication skills, and a personable demeanor. The position includes conducting site visits and / or providing resident inspection, monitoring contractor(s) schedule, verifying construction documents and approving shop drawings, and handling any questions that may arise during the construction phase while under the supervision of the Engineer. The Construction Inspector / Manager will make field visits as required and attend meetings; and represent Dewberry at meetings, interpret and support our designs, and act as Dewberry’s liaison. They will also progress into a position responsible for overseeing the Inspection staff.

Perform on-site resident inspection for projects under construction through our Daphne office. Typically, the staff member will be in the field for 30 to 40hrs per week with the occasional need for overtime work depending on the Contractor’s schedule. This is a full time position.

  • When resident inspection projects are not available the staff member will be expected to assist our office with engineering and project management tasks
  • Ability to apply mathematical formulas and general engineering and construction principles to determine field adjustments; maintain detailed records; perform required materials testing; and communicate effectively with agency and contractor personnel and the public
  • Prepare cost estimates
  • Assist Engineer with coordination and facilitation of the bid process for construction plans
  • Organize, attend, and document construction meetings. Take and distribute good meeting minutes, photos, field reports.
  • Conduct construction site inspections to verify conformance with plans and code
  • Review pay applications
  • Organize and maintain project files during construction
  • Prepare and review as-built drawings and close-out materials
  • Prepare final certification documentation
  • Prepares, maintains and secures contract records including correspondence, contractor documents, meeting minutes, daily inspection reports, specifications, non-compliance notices, etc.
  • Reviews and modifies drawings, specifications, installation sequences, and progress reports and initiates corrective measures, if necessary, while the supervision of an Engineer
  • Reviews construction procedures submitted by contractors to assure conformance with overall project plan
  • Acts as technical liaison between Client, contractor and design engineering personnel
  • May oversee the work of lower-level construction engineering inspectors who assist on projects
  • Manage budgets for CEI tasks on projects
  • Perform observation and documentation of construction activities and safety procedures performed by others
  • Verification of compliance with construction bid and design documents
  • Preparation of daily, weekly and/or monthly reports
  • Submittal coordination and review of materials of construction, equipment, schedules, installation means and methods and operation and maintenance requirements
  • Review and coordination of requests for information
  • Coordination with multiple parties, organizations, and stakeholders including engineers, contractors, subcontractors, and clients
  • Development and review of work plans, design documents, change orders
  • Cost estimating and contractor pay request reviews
  • Provide Quality Assurance reviews on construction projects to ensure objectives and assignments are conducted in conformance to contract documents
  • Prepare and/or approve Quality Assurance Reports on field operations which may include findings and recommendations for corrective actions

Accomplished (at least 3 years of experience) Construction Professional (working for Engineer, Surveyor, Contractor, or Municipality) in site construction, project management, or construction supervision.

  • High School diploma required.
  • A Bachelor's degree is preferred with experience specializing in construction/engineering management, civil engineering, or other similar degrees. Experience in the field of construction or cost estimating is also acceptable.
  • Ability to obtain certifications through ALDOT.
  • Knowledge of roadway and pipeline construction methods, materials, standards and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Knowledge of surveying principals is a plus.
  • Working skill in operating computer equipment, software programs and field inspection equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of construction manuals, standards, and specifications
  • Familiar with municipal, ALDOT, and general construction practices and standards.
  • Experience with underground utilities, earthwork, asphalt, and concrete.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with the use of AutoCAD, Adobe, Excel and Microsoft Office suites. Inspection reporting will be performed using paperless technology.
  • Ability to interpret construction plans as well as public roadway plans, specifications, and contracts.
  • Ability to understand, review and markup shop drawings and as-built surveys.
  • Position will require learning and becoming proficient in Dewberry engineering practices and standards, and other Dewberry-specific software programs
