The Layout Engineer is responsible for establishing and maintaining accurate project control, layout, and surveying operations on concrete construction projects. This role ensures that all foundations, footings, slabs, walls, columns, embeds, anchor bolts, and structural elements are positioned and constructed in accordance with project plans, specifications, and quality standards.
The Layout Engineer serves as a critical link between the engineering, project management, and field operations teams by translating design documents into precise field measurements that support safe, efficient, and accurate construction execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform construction layout for footings, foundations, slabs, columns, walls, embeds, and anchor bolts.
- Establish and maintain horizontal and vertical project control throughout all phases of construction.
- Review and interpret civil, structural, architectural, and shop drawings to identify layout requirements.
- Utilize Total Stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, robotic survey instruments, and digital levels to perform field layout activities.
- Verify dimensions, elevations, grades, and alignments prior to concrete placement.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and subcontractors to ensure field accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
- Perform pre-pour inspections to verify formwork, reinforcing steel, embeds, and layout compliance.
- Generate and maintain as-built documentation and field records.
- Assist in identifying and resolving field conflicts, design inconsistencies, and constructability concerns.
- Ensure all layout activities comply with project specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.
- Support project scheduling efforts by providing timely layout services to field operations.
- Maintain and calibrate survey equipment and manage layout data files.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in construction layout, surveying, or concrete construction.
- Strong understanding of concrete construction methods and sequencing.
- Proficiency with Total Stations, GPS/GNSS systems, digital levels, and layout software.
- Ability to read and interpret structural, civil, and architectural drawings.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office applications.
- OSHA 10 Certification required; OSHA 30 preferred.
- Valid Driver's License and ability to travel between project sites.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Surveying, or related field.
- CST (Certified Survey Technician) certification.
- Experience on large-scale commercial, industrial, healthcare, infrastructure, or concrete self-perform projects.
- Familiarity with Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Trimble Business Center, or Leica software platforms.
