What types of projects do Constellation Interns typically work on, and how do these experiences contribute to their professional development?

Constellation Interns often engage in hands-on projects related to space systems, data analysis, or satellite operations, depending on the department. These projects usually involve working closely with experienced engineers and scientists, allowing interns to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges like mission planning, telemetry analysis, or hardware testing. This collaborative environment helps interns develop technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and an understanding of industry workflows, which are valuable for launching a career in aerospace or related fields.

What is the difference between Constellation Internship vs Satellite Operations Intern?

The Constellation Internship and Satellite Operations Intern roles both target students or recent graduates interested in satellite technology and aerospace. While they share similar educational backgrounds and work environments, the Constellation Internship often emphasizes broader constellation systems and network integration, whereas Satellite Operations Intern focuses specifically on satellite management and operations. Both roles provide valuable hands-on experience in the space industry, preparing interns for careers in satellite technology and aerospace engineering.

What is a Constellation Internship?

A Constellation Internship is a temporary, structured work experience program offered by Constellation, a leading energy company. These internships are designed for students or recent graduates who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in the energy industry, including areas like engineering, business, IT, and environmental science. Interns work on real projects, receive mentorship, and develop professional skills that can help launch their careers. The internships typically take place during the summer and may provide networking opportunities and pathways to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Constellation Intern, and why are they important?

To excel as a Constellation Intern, you generally need a solid academic background in fields like engineering, business, or computer science, with a strong interest in the energy industry. Familiarity with data analysis tools (such as Excel or Tableau), basic project management software, and, in some cases, coding or technical systems relevant to the internship focus is beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a willingness to learn help interns stand out in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills are crucial for contributing effectively to projects, adapting to industry demands, and maximizing the learning experience.

Job description

FULL STACK SOFTWARE ENGINEER, CONSTELLATION TOOLS (STARLINK)

Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation and is providing fast, reliable internet to millions of users worldwide. As a member of the Constellation Tools team at SpaceX, you'll build the user interfaces and backend to enable safe and efficient operations for all Starlink satellites and ground assets. Your products are the operational tools operations, engineering, and reliability teams rely on. In this role you'll curate smooth user experiences with thoughtful designs while limiting software complexity.  Your contributions will directly impact operational safety for satellites and the ability to scale the network.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop well-architected, highly reliable, responsive, and performant web applications to command, control, and monitor fleets of assets
  • Create aesthetic and easy-to-use user interfaces that reduce the operational load of operators and maintain high guardrails for safety
  • Create and apply techniques, tools, and infrastructure that decrease software complexity and maintenance over time
  • Maintain high software standards and software engineering best practices across the full stack
  • Regularly sit with Operators to obtain firsthand feedback of how the team's products are used and what improvements can be made
  • Demonstrate a strong attitude to learn and adapt quickly, diving deep into new technologies as needed to become an expert in frontend and backend technologies alike (while prior expertise in key areas is a plus)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree in STEM & 1+ year of industry and/or internship experience; OR 3+ years of professional software development experience in lieu of a STEM degree.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Frontend experience in Angular, React, or a similar JavaScript framework
  • Programming experience in Python, C#, .NET, Go, Scala, Java, or similar object-oriented language
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, CockroachDB, or similar relational database technologies
  • Production experience with infrastructure tools such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with version control, continuous integration, and continuous delivery systems
  • Expertise in profiling and improving application performance
  • Experience with build systems (Make, Bazel/Pants/Buck, Gradle) and package management tools (pip, npm)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • A drive to deliver exceptional operations tools and willingness to own all outcomes

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends as needed for mission critical deadlines
  • Ability to work on an "on-call" basis on a weeklong rotational schedule

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Full Stack Software Engineer/Level I: $125,000.00 - $145,000.00/per year
Full Stack Software Engineer/Level II: $145,000.00 - $175,000.00/per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You will also receive access to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Employees in Washington State accrue paid sick time in compliance with state and federal law.
