Senior Software Engineer, Fleet Mission Control

Bot Auto

Houston, TX โ€ข Remote

$117K - $154K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Company Introduction

At Bot Auto, we are revolutionizing the transportation of goods with our cutting-edge autonomous trucks, enhancing the quality of life for communities around the globe. With the agility of a start-up and the wisdom of seasoned experts, Bot Auto boasts a team that has achieved numerous world-firsts and unparalleled innovations. United by a shared vision, we create miracles and propel the future of transportation. Join us and transform your dreams into reality.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Software Engineer, Operation Platforms to architect and build the platforms that run Bot Auto's autonomous trucking operations. Our Operation Platforms builds the intelligence and automation behind fleet scheduling, fleet management, fleet maintenance, mission control, remote assistance, IoT platform, business intelligence, and operational efficiency. Together, these platforms form a cyber-physical operating system that turns commercial freight into executable, monitored, and reconciled work. In this role, you will design the core object models, state machines, and services that coordinate Loads, Legs, Missions, and Trips across digital and physical domains, with clear authority boundaries, deterministic foundations, and room for agentic automation on top. As a hands-on technical leader, you will build operator-facing tools and backend services that move our fleet safely and efficiently in real-world commercial operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and build the core operation platforms - scheduler, dispatcher, vehicle console, ATC, and TMS - and the services that coordinate them.
  • Design durable object models, state machines, and lifecycle logic for the system's core entities (Load, Leg, Mission, Trip) and the structured events that connect them (e.g., execution impact events, mission closeout packages).
  • Establish clear authority boundaries between applications (a source-of-authority model), keeping the deterministic core reliable, traceable, and auditable while enabling probabilistic, agent-assisted automation on top.
  • Build real-time operator tooling and role-based views for dispatchers, remote assistants, technicians, and fleet managers - covering monitoring, mission control, exception handling, and remote assistance.
  • Develop backend services, APIs, and event-driven integrations that connect digital planning with the physical fleet, including the vehicle console at the edge.
  • Ensure safety-relevant workflows (e.g., launch authorization and dual-clearance, recovery and physical-takeover handoff) are correct, observable, and resilient.
  • Partner with autonomy, operations, product, and physical-layer teams to translate real operational workflows into dependable software.
  • Drive engineering excellence through system design, code quality, testing, observability, and mentorship.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience building backend services and/or full-stack applications in production
  • Strong software development skills in one or more languages: Python, Go, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Experience designing distributed systems, data models, state machines, or workflow/lifecycle-driven applications
  • Solid understanding of APIs, databases, and event-driven architectures
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with operations-critical, mission-control, logistics, fleet management, TMS, dispatch/scheduling, or marketplace systems
  • Experience building real-time systems and operator-facing tools (live dashboards, command-and-control)
  • Familiarity with event-driven and streaming platforms (NATS, Kafka, MQTT, etc.) and modern frontend frameworks (React, TypeScript)
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS), containerization (Docker), and Kubernetes
  • Exposure to LLM/agentic automation and human-in-the-loop systems
  • Interest in autonomous systems, robotics, or cyber-physical systems
  • Strong product sense and the ability to collaborate closely with operations teams
