Overview

As a Fishing Team Member at The Wilds, you'll create memorable experiences for visitors, assist with fishing excursions, and serve as an ambassador for our conservation mission. The Fishing Team Member supports fishing excursions by assisting guests with equipment, operating vehicles, and ensuring safety while delivering high-quality guest service and conservation messaging. The role includes preparing gear, staging boats, maintaining clean work areas, and upholding all Wilds safety and operational protocols.
Responsibilities
Guest Engagement & Conservation Education
  • Develop a thorough understanding of The Wilds' conservation initiatives and deliver engaging, informative interactions with visitors.
  • Act as a representative of The Wilds, maintaining professional conduct, language, and appearance at all times.
  • Greet guests, provide essential information, and verify proper documentation such as liability forms and Ohio Fishing Licenses.
  • Provide safety briefings prior to fishing excursions, including water safety, equipment handling, and wildlife awareness.

Fishing Operations & Equipment Handling
  • Assist guests with fishing equipment, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience.
  • Prepare and stage proper fishing equipment and boats prior to excursions as directed by a supervisor.
  • Inspect fishing gear (rods, reels, bait buckets, life jackets) daily to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Ensure bait and tackle are stored, handled, and disposed of in accordance with wildlife and environmental guidelines.
  • Assist guests in safely boarding and exiting boats or shoreline fishing areas.

Vehicle, Boat & Safety Procedures
  • Transport visitors through guest and animal areas, including during fishing safaris.
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections and ensure vehicles are kept clean (windows, floors, seats, etc.).
  • Ensure life jackets and safety equipment are properly fitted and used according to policy.
  • Maintain safety and compliance by adhering to all operational protocols and procedures.
  • Monitor weather conditions and alert supervisors of rapidly changing or unsafe weather patterns.
  • Operate a two-way radio for communication and coordination.

Facilities & Environmental Support
  • Assist in light housekeeping and groundskeeping tasks to maintain a clean and inviting environment.
  • Implement sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Report equipment issues, safety hazards, or guest concerns promptly to a supervisor.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Support The Wilds, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, and Safari Golf Club by upholding their mission and values.

Qualifications
Education & Background
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Some college coursework in biology, education, interpretation, wildlife management, ecology, or related fields preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

Guest Service & Communication Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in public speaking, programming, guest services, or educational roles is a plus.
  • Excellent guest service skills with a positive and professional attitude.
  • Capacity to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with team members and guests.

Operational & Outdoor Skills
  • Comfortable operating a two-way radio for communication.
  • Ability to walk long distances, including inclines, while assisting guests with fishing equipment.
  • Basic water safety awareness and comfort working around lakes, boats, and docks.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry fishing gear, coolers, or equipment as needed (up to 25-30 lbs).
  • Ability to work independently, efficiently plan tasks, and stay organized.
  • Capable of making responsible decisions and adapting to changing circumstances in a busy work environment.

Schedule & Work Conditions
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Comfort working outdoors in variable weather conditions.

Compliance & Licensing Requirements
  • Possession of a valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Subject to a criminal background check and Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) review.
  • Subject to The Wilds' Drug-Free Workplace Policy.
  • This position is not eligible for overtime pay.
