This is an excellent opportunity for professionals who enjoy working in the field, collaborating with developers and contractors, and helping shape growing communities through responsible land development and environmental stewardship.
In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring construction projects meet approved plans, stormwater regulations, erosion and sediment control requirements, and local development standards. Every day brings new challenges as you work on a variety of residential, commercial, utility, and public infrastructure projects.
Whether you have experience in municipal inspections, land development, civil construction, stormwater compliance, or erosion and sediment control, this position offers the opportunity to build your expertise while making a visible impact on community development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct field inspections of active construction and land development projects to verify compliance with approved plans, permits, specifications, and applicable regulations.
- Inspect site grading, utility installation, drainage systems, stormwater facilities, erosion and sediment control measures, paving operations, and final site stabilization activities.
- Evaluate the installation, maintenance, and effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BMPs) designed to prevent erosion, sedimentation, and stormwater runoff impacts.
- Verify site conditions, elevations, drainage patterns, and stormwater infrastructure against approved construction documents and design plans.
- Document inspection findings, collect measurements, take photographs, and prepare detailed reports identifying compliance issues and recommended corrective actions.
- Coordinate with contractors, developers, engineers, consultants, municipal staff, and regulatory agencies to resolve construction and compliance concerns.
- Issue notices of deficiency, correction requirements, or enforcement actions as authorized.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, site observations, corrective actions, and as-built documentation.
- Support permitting, plan review, and development review processes by providing field observations and recommendations.
- Investigate and respond to citizen concerns related to erosion, sedimentation, drainage, and stormwater issues.
- Assist with municipal stormwater program requirements, including compliance with MS4 permit obligations and other state and federal environmental regulations.
- Promote and maintain a strong culture of safety while working on active construction sites.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the service area.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, site plans, specifications, permits, and engineering drawings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare clear inspection reports and communicate professionally with stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently in the field and make sound decisions regarding site compliance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Science, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Experience in stormwater inspection, land development, erosion and sediment control, municipal inspections, civil construction, utility construction, or related activities.
- Working knowledge of grading, drainage systems, stormwater management practices, and erosion and sediment control requirements.
- Experience reviewing site plans, permits, and construction drawings.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal stormwater and environmental regulations.
Preferred Certifications:
- Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission (GSWCC) Certified Erosion, Sediment and Pollution Control Inspector.
- GSWCC Level 1A Fundamentals Certification.
- NPDES Stormwater Training or related stormwater certifications.
- Additional land development, construction inspection, or environmental compliance certifications are a plus.
Working Conditions:
- Primarily field-based position with regular visits to active construction sites.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain, including slopes, uneven ground, mud, and excavation areas.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety vests, safety glasses, and work boots.
- Some office work is required for report preparation, documentation, and project coordination.
