Job description

Job Title: Buyer
Location: Farmington Hills, MI
Company: Confidential Manufacturing Company
Employment Type: Full-Time

Company Overview

A well-established manufacturing company in the Farmington Hills area is seeking an experienced Buyer to support purchasing, vendor coordination, and material availability for a precision manufacturing environment.

This is a confidential search for a company that builds highly engineered equipment and supports customers across advanced manufacturing industries. The right candidate will understand the pace, detail, and urgency that comes with purchasing in a production-focused environment.

Position Summary

The Buyer will be responsible for sourcing and purchasing materials, components, supplies, and services needed to support manufacturing operations. This person will work closely with engineering, production, inventory, quality, and vendors to ensure materials are ordered accurately, delivered on time, and aligned with company requirements.

The ideal candidate has prior buying or purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment and understands how delays, shortages, vendor issues, or incorrect parts can impact production schedules.

Key Responsibilities
  • Purchase materials, components, tooling, supplies, and outside services to support manufacturing and production needs.
  • Review purchase requisitions, create purchase orders, and follow up with vendors on order status, pricing, and delivery dates.
  • Work closely with production, engineering, and inventory teams to understand material requirements and urgency.
  • Monitor supplier performance related to delivery, quality, pricing, and responsiveness.
  • Communicate with vendors to resolve late shipments, shortages, incorrect parts, pricing discrepancies, and quality concerns.
  • Maintain accurate purchasing records, order confirmations, lead times, and vendor information.
  • Support cost-saving efforts by comparing pricing, negotiating when appropriate, and identifying alternative suppliers.
  • Help ensure materials are available to keep production schedules on track.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to clarify specifications, drawings, quantities, and delivery requirements.
  • Assist with continuous improvement efforts related to purchasing processes, supplier reliability, and inventory control.
Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a Buyer, Purchasing Coordinator, Procurement Specialist, or similar role.
  • Experience purchasing in a manufacturing, industrial, machining, machine build, automation, or production environment.
  • Ability to read and understand purchase requirements, part numbers, specifications, and vendor quotes.
  • Strong follow-up skills and the ability to manage multiple open orders at once.
  • Comfortable communicating with vendors, internal teams, and leadership.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with purchase orders, pricing, quantities, and delivery dates.
  • Experience working with ERP/MRP systems or purchasing software.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change quickly.
  • Strong problem-solving skills when dealing with shortages, delays, or vendor issues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience purchasing mechanical, electrical, tooling, machine components, or custom-manufactured parts.
  • Background in precision machinery, automation, automotive, industrial equipment, or manufacturing services.
  • Experience with vendor negotiation, supplier development, or cost reduction projects.
  • Familiarity with inventory control, production planning, or supply chain coordination.
  • Ability to read basic technical drawings, bills of material, or manufacturing documentation.
Benefits
  • Competitive pay based on experience.
  • Full-time opportunity with a stable and established manufacturing company.
  • Opportunity to support highly engineered products and advanced manufacturing operations.
  • Collaborative team environment with direct impact on production success.
  • Long-term career growth potential within purchasing, supply chain, or operations.
Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a manufacturing setting where accuracy and timing matter. This person does not just place orders โ€” they follow through, communicate clearly, and understand how purchasing decisions affect production, delivery, and customer commitments.
