Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Homeless Outreach Overnight Shelter Coordinator (on-call)
REPORTS TO: Shelter Manager
SUPERVISES: N/A
LOCATION: 9715 SE Powell Blvd
STATUS: Part-time (on-call), non-exempt
WAGE: $24 per hour for Overnight shifts – 8pm to 7am, and a bonus possibility of $1,500 after completing 1,000 hours of work
OVERALL POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Union Gospel Mission has a 90-year history of helping people experiencing homelessness in Portland. Our Purpose is feeding the hungry, restoring the addict and loving our neighbor. Our highest values are to connect and coach people experiencing homelessness to abundant life in Christ through direct life essential assistance and a path to sustainable work, housing, and a God-honoring life in partnership with churches and other organizations. This is a part-time, temporary position.
The position will work up to 2-3 nights each week, overseeing night shelter with other staff members for approximately 100 guests.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Work alongside staff, LifeChange residents and volunteers to provide shelter to approximately 100 guests
- Refer guests to UGM and Agape Village staff who express a desire to enter LifeChange recovery and/or other programs
- Check guests in using Mission Tracker software
- Set out mats for guests; supervise the line outside the building, admit guests into the building
- Prep food and coffee; clean the bathrooms (including toilets), vacuum, and other cleaning responsibilities
- Speak to shelter guests and coworkers in a kind and respectful manner
- Distribute blankets, explain the guidelines, supervise the area throughout the night, walk through the room regularly to ensure everyone is safe
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Champion for compassionate short and long-term spiritual, physical and emotional care
- Personal, warm yet professional demeanor
- De-escalation skills – training available
- Comfortable working with a wide diversity of stakeholders including volunteers, the LifeChange recovery community and individuals experiencing homelessness
- Able to deal with tense interactions with skill and diplomacy
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Able to quickly problem-solve
- Exposure and involvement with a wide variety of Christ followers
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- A criminal history and background check are required and must be successfully completed
- Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks as assigned
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
- Ability to walk up and down steps
- Training will be offered including de-escalation, crisis management, Mission Tracker registration and check-in process
QUALIFICATIONS:
Character: Strong commitment to the vision and values of Union Gospel Mission, have a passion for the gospel, and a desire to serve the homeless, broken, and addicted. Must be a follower of Jesus Christ and actively involved in a local Christian church. Must adhere to UGM’s statement of faith and standards of conduct.
