Job description

The Specialist is responsible for supervising and directing activities related to the performance of environmental sampling and chemical analysis of a wide variety of samples submitted to the EH&S ChemLab at Astoria. Ensures sampling and analytical activities are performed productively and in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, directives, and orders which regulate environmental analysis to ensure legally defensible analytical results are obtained to support the companys environmental programs.

This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.

Required Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED and a minimum of 6 years' relevant work experience or
  • Associate's Degree and 4 years' work experience or
  • Bachelor's Degree and 3 years' work experience

Relevant Work Experience

  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions

  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
  • Position requires flexibility to work outdoors and rotating shifts.
Core Responsibilities
  • Responsible for assignment of daily work to technicians, technician performance evaluations, tracking technician productivity, meeting technician training goals and ensuring standards are met.
  • Review and maintain procedures and training documents.
  • Maintain a high level of expertise in the use of the Company's various computer systems (e.g. HR Employee Hub and Oracle), laboratory systems (e.g. LIMS, Maximo, Chromeleon), and the Microsoft Office products.
  • Responsible for rotational participation as the Emergency Duty Supervisory position, which is the responsible ChemLab contact for all Company Operating Organizations during off-shifts and weekends.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of department goals.
  • Conduct regular inspections of work areas to minimize safety hazards and ensure procedural compliance; conducting safety talks at regular intervals and encouraging participation; fostering a culture which promotes and supports excellence in safety and environmental compliance.
  • Ensure costs are monitored and controlled through the prudent use of consumables and staff resources.
  • Maintain records on all pertinent data for area of responsibility. Prepares written reports as required related to incidents of importance.
  • Ensure that good housekeeping and cleanliness practices are followed by frequent inspections of work areas.
  • Respond to field emergencies on off-shifts and weekends.
  • May be required to work shifts exceeding 8 hours when necessary.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
