How much do concrete materials engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for concrete materials engineer in the United States is $76,676.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43,500.00 and $97,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Concrete Materials Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectConcrete Materials EngineerStructural Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Civil Engineering or Materials Science, certifications like ACIBachelor's in Civil or Structural Engineering, PE license
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, material testing facilities, construction sitesDesign offices, construction sites, structural analysis labs
Industry UsageMaterial development, testing, quality control in constructionStructural design, analysis, and safety assessments

While both roles are vital in construction, Concrete Materials Engineers focus on developing and testing concrete materials, ensuring quality and durability. Structural Engineers design and analyze structures to ensure safety and stability. They often collaborate but have distinct responsibilities within the construction industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Concrete Materials Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Concrete Materials Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or materials engineering, with knowledge of concrete properties, mix design, and construction standards, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and licensure. Familiarity with laboratory testing equipment, quality control systems, and industry software like AutoCAD or MATLAB is typical. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating with construction teams and interpreting test results. These abilities ensure the durability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of concrete structures and projects.

What does a Concrete Materials Engineer do?

A Concrete Materials Engineer specializes in developing, testing, and improving concrete mixtures for construction projects. They analyze the properties of raw materials, design mixes to meet specific engineering requirements, and ensure that the final product meets safety, durability, and environmental standards. Their expertise helps in solving problems related to concrete performance, such as cracking, strength, and sustainability. They often collaborate with architects, civil engineers, and construction teams to provide technical guidance throughout a project's lifecycle.

What are some typical challenges a Concrete Materials Engineer might face when working on large construction projects?

Concrete Materials Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent material quality across multiple suppliers, adapting mix designs to changing site conditions, and troubleshooting issues like premature cracking or unexpected setting times. Collaboration with contractors, project managers, and quality control teams is crucial to resolve these challenges efficiently. Additionally, staying up-to-date with evolving standards and sustainable material options is important for long-term project success.
