What is a concrete block worker?

Concrete block workers, also known as concrete block masons or blocklayers, are skilled tradespeople who specialize in building structures using concrete blocks. They are responsible for laying concrete blocks in mortar to construct walls, partitions, and other structures in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Their work involves measuring, cutting, and aligning blocks, as well as ensuring structural integrity and proper finishing. Concrete block workers may also repair and maintain existing block structures. This role requires attention to detail, physical strength, and knowledge of construction safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a concrete block mason?

To thrive as a Concrete Block Mason, you need proficiency in masonry techniques, blueprint reading, and a solid understanding of construction safety standards, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training. Experience with trowels, levels, mortar mixers, and power tools is essential, along with OSHA safety certification. Strong attention to detail, physical stamina, and teamwork skills help ensure precise work and effective collaboration on job sites. These abilities are crucial for building structurally sound walls and structures while maintaining safety and efficiency in construction projects.

What are some common challenges faced by concrete block masons on construction sites?

Concrete block masons often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, which can affect mortar setting and block placement. They may also need to ensure precise alignment and level of each block to maintain structural integrity, often while working under tight project deadlines. Collaboration with other trades, such as carpenters and site supervisors, is essential to coordinate tasks and resolve on-site issues efficiently. Additionally, maintaining safety standards while handling heavy materials is a constant priority.

Job description

Mountain House Masonry is looking for an experienced Block Mason to join our growing crew. We're a small, hands-on team looking to add someone who knows their way around block work and is ready to contribute on active job sites.

The ideal candidate has experience laying block and at least some experience working with concrete. You do not need to be an expert at both. Block laying experience is the priority, and we're willing to help the right person develop their concrete finishing skills.

If you're dependable, experienced in the trade, and looking for a company where you can put your skills to work and continue growing, we'd like to hear from you.

Pay

$20 - $40 per hour, based on experience and skill level

Higher compensation is available for candidates with strong block and concrete experience or the ability to take on additional responsibility and help run a crew.

Responsibilities

  • Lay concrete block accurately and efficiently
  • Perform concrete work and finishing as needed
  • Prepare work areas and materials for masonry and concrete projects
  • Read measurements and maintain proper lines, levels, and alignment
  • Work safely and productively alongside a small crew
  • Assist with a variety of masonry and concrete projects
  • Maintain tools and keep job sites organized
  • Take direction while also being able to work independently based on experience

What We're Looking For

  • Previous block laying or masonry experience
  • Some hands-on concrete experience
  • Approximately 1-2 years of relevant experience preferred, but skill and ability are more important than a specific number of years
  • Willingness to learn and develop additional concrete finishing skills
  • Dependable and able to work consistently as part of a crew
  • Strong work ethic and attention to quality
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of masonry and concrete work

No brick or stone experience is required.

Work Area

Our projects are primarily located throughout the Kunkletown, Lehighton, Palmerton, Jim Thorpe, Albrightsville, Blakeslee, and Brodheadsville areas.

Why Join Mountain House Masonry?

We're growing our crew so we can take on more work, and we're looking for someone who wants to grow with us. This is a good opportunity for an experienced tradesperson who already has a foundation in block or concrete work and wants the opportunity to expand their skills and earning potential.

Apply today with your relevant masonry, block, or concrete experience.
