Position and Salary
The Attorney General's Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 2 in the Labor and Personnel Division. This position is located in Tumwater, Washington, and is not union-represented.
Paralegal 2 (Range 55) salary range: $62,880 - $84,528 (Effective 7/1/2026)
The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

About the Labor & Personnel Division
The Labor and personnel Division is comprised of 19 attorneys and 12 professional staff located in Tumwater and Spokane. The Labor and Personnel Division represents and advises all state agencies and most colleges and universities on labor and employment issues, including labor negotiations and arbitrations, anti-discrimination laws, wage laws, employee discipline, public disclosure laws, and state and federal family and medical leave laws. The division also handles civil litigation related to wage and hour law, and public disclosure.
Duties and Essential Functions of a Paralegal 2
  • Provide Litigation Support on Cases: Independently prepare letters, pleadings, and other documents for litigation, including affidavits and declarations in support of motions.
  • Review and prepare responses to formal discovery requests, including interrogatories, requests for production, and requests for admission; review answers to opposing parties' requests for discovery for completeness and proper objections.
  • Research and gather facts; identify legal issues; interview witnesses to obtain information relating to the facts and defenses of the case. Report findings to attorneys and prepare memoranda, as appropriate, to the case file.
  • Prepare for and participate in trials and hearings, working with the litigation team during case. Development and preparation, including analysis of legal issues, exhibit preparation, and presentation of the case during trial.
  • Prepare witnesses, documentary evidence, computer-generated evidence, and demonstrative evidence for trials, hearings, depositions, and any other proceeding in which testimony is required. Identify and provide information and evidence to experts. Assist in drafting contracts and tracking payments to lay and expert witnesses.
  • File documents at the court and serve documents on opposing counsel. Assist in filing forms and documents in all forums.
  • Provide technical and legal support in every aspect of class action cases and labor and personnel cases. Establish priorities in accordance with relevant statutes, rules of evidence, and court-imposed deadlines.
  • Identify, locate, collect, organize, analyze, and manage documentary, statistical, computer, and demonstrative evidence, including records and other information obtained from public and private sources.
  • Review documents for attorney client privileged communication, work product, and information that is statutorily protected from production.
  • Conduct legal and other technical research utilizing Westlaw, CBAs, library resources, state archives, documents provided by the clients, and the internet regarding case specific issues, case law, and legislative history.
  • Serves as the primary Bill Analysis Coordinator for the division, coordinating and tracking bill analysis responses.
  • Serves as backup or rotational CE Reader to review all mail and identifies, calculates, and calendars critical events pursuant to AGO Policy and Procedures.

Combination of four years of experience* through:
  • Paralegal certification
  • Two-year paralegal degree
  • Paralegal plus (or nine-month paralegal, post BA) certification,

  • One year experience as a Paralegal 1 in Washington State Service.

*You may have gained applicable paraprofessional experience through previous Paralegal or Legal Assistant work.
Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney:
  • Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence
  • Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents
  • Calculating, verifying, and calendaring critical events and other dates
  • Managing case documents, files and exhibits
  • Tracking and organizing discovery documents
  • Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy
