What is a computer vision engineer?

Computer Vision Engineers are professionals who develop algorithms and systems that enable computers to interpret and process visual information from the world, such as images and videos. They work on tasks like object detection, facial recognition, image segmentation, and more, often using machine learning and deep learning techniques. These engineers apply their expertise in fields like robotics, autonomous vehicles, healthcare, and augmented reality, turning raw visual data into actionable insights.

What does a computer vision engineer do?

Computer vision is a branch of artificial intelligence that attempts to replicate human analytical processes by using algorithms and computer models to understand and identify patterns in images. As a computer vision engineer, you use software to handle the processing and analysis of large data populations, and your efforts support the automation of predictive decision-making efforts. Your responsibilities involve research, programming, data analysis, and user interface design. You may work on a variety of exciting development projects like self-driving cars, mobile devices, innovative features and capabilities in sports and entertainment, and the next generation of social media enhancements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer vision engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Vision Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, and machine learning, often supported by a relevant degree and experience with image processing algorithms. Familiarity with tools and frameworks such as OpenCV, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and proficiency in programming languages like Python or C++ is essential, along with knowledge of deep learning techniques. Analytical thinking, creativity, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing innovative vision solutions, interpreting complex data, and collaborating efficiently within interdisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by computer vision engineers when deploying models to production environments?

Computer Vision Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring model accuracy in diverse real-world conditions, optimizing models for efficiency on edge devices, and handling large-scale data processing. Deploying models to production requires balancing performance with resource constraints and addressing issues like latency, scalability, and data privacy. Collaborating closely with software engineers and data scientists is crucial to integrate solutions effectively and continuously monitor and improve model performance in live applications.

What is the difference between Computer Vision Engineer vs Machine Learning Engineer?

Job description

About AgZen:
AgZen is a fast-growing precision agriculture company headquartered in Somerville, MA, built on MIT research and focused on one problem: making crop spraying more efficient. Our flagship product, RealCoverage, is the world's first system that measures and controls droplet coverage at the leaf level, giving growers real-time visibility into spray performance and cutting chemical and water use by up to 50% without sacrificing yield.
We are a small, technically deep team working at the intersection of fluid mechanics, computer vision, AI, and real agricultural environments. If you want to build technology with measurable impact on how the world grows food, this is the place to do it.
About the Role:
We are looking for a sharp, tenacious, and creative Field Engineer to help with the development and implementation of AgZen's product portfolio. This role is at the intersection of agrochemical spraying, science, and engineering. This position will broadly support AgZen's on-field commercial and in-lab research and development activities to reduce pesticide use, focusing on the continual improvements of our products used in food crops. The role will involve solving diverse, complex problems as a part of our world class engineering team, focusing on installing our products on farms across the US, focusing mainly in the Midwest, and working closely with commercial customers throughout the growing season to ensure product performance and uptime. Strong communication and organizational skills are a must. Teamwork and the desire to learn in a fast-paced environment in the field are all essential skills for a successful applicant. Previous field experience is a plus for this position.
The position is based around Brookston, IN and travel may be expected to meet or exceed 50% of time during peak growing months.
What You'll Do
  • Coordinate with customers to schedule installation, service, and maintenance events
  • Install AgZen equipment on customer machines documenting the process using collaborative field documentation software
  • Train sprayer operators on usage of our products to ensure proper and safe usage
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment following safety guidelines, while maintaining detailed field records along the way
  • Assist with field and in-lab experimentation on AgZen's product portfolio that will translate to on-field implementation
  • Collaborate with AgZen's technical team and manufacturing team to communicate customer needs

About You
  • You are passionate, genuinely curious, and innovative
  • You have unwavering personal integrity and work ethic
  • You are proactive, productive, and complete tasks promptly
  • You excel in a team-centric environment that is transparent and accountable
  • You are passionate about building new technologies that integrate different fields
  • You are adaptable and excel working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

What We're Looking For
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in agronomy, crop sciences, mechanical engineering, environmental science, electrical engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum of 2+ years of work experience in a related field
  • Ability to understand and interact with agricultural equipment and technology
  • Basic understanding of crop production, crop protection, and agriculture
  • Ability to work well in a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary environment
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in heat and humidity

What We Offer:
  • The opportunity to make an immediate and visible impact in a fast-growing company
  • Early-employee equity
  • 401(k) with employer matching at 6 months of employment
  • 6 weeks of PTO per calendar year
  • 12 paid holidays
  • Medical, Dental and Vision insurance

The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $75,000 depending on skills and qualifications evaluated on a per candidate basis.
