What does a computer vision engineer intern do?

A Computer Vision Engineer Intern assists in developing and implementing algorithms that enable computers to process and interpret visual information from the world, such as images or videos. They often work on projects involving object detection, image segmentation, and other tasks related to image analysis and machine learning. Interns usually collaborate with experienced engineers, contribute to codebases, and help test and optimize models for various applications. Their work supports industries like robotics, healthcare, automotive, and more.

What types of projects and tasks can a computer vision engineer intern typically expect to work on during their internship?

As a Computer Vision Engineer Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as developing image recognition algorithms, annotating datasets, and testing computer vision models for accuracy and performance. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers and data scientists, contributing to tasks like data preprocessing, model training, and performance benchmarking. This role offers a great opportunity to gain practical experience with popular frameworks such as OpenCV and TensorFlow, and to develop skills in both research and applied development within interdisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer vision engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Vision Engineer Intern, you need a solid background in computer science, mathematics, and image processing, typically supported by coursework or experience in machine learning and programming (Python, C++). Job description

AI Engineer

Location: SF/ NYC/ Hybrid

Type: Full-Time | Founding Team Opportunity

About Navigate AI

Navigate is building frontier AI technology for the field workforceโ€”starting with construction. We've partnered with some of the biggest infrastructure companies in the U.S. and have early traction combining AI, spatial computing, and video intelligence.

We've just scratched the surface of whatโ€™s possible with spatial video, LIDAR, and computer vision. Now we're looking for a founding computer vision engineer to push this to the next level.

The Role

Weโ€™re looking for a hands-on, creative CV engineer who wants to build products that live in the real worldโ€”not just the lab. Youโ€™ll work directly with the founding team to bring video-based intelligence to life, using real footage from job sites, spatial data, and user context.

Youโ€™ll shape the computer vision layer of our productโ€”from prototyping and modeling to integrating it directly into customer-facing applications.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Design and develop real-time video analysis pipelines, including object detection, tracking, pose estimation, or 3D reconstruction

  • Explore LIDAR, depth data, or SLAM to improve spatial awareness in vision models

  • Fine-tune models using real-world, domain-specific data from the field

  • Collaborate closely with product and engineering to ship features that blend AI, video, and intuitive UX

  • Experiment with AI prompting or LLM tools to layer intelligence over video data

  • Help shape the long-term CV strategy and technical architecture

You Might Be a Fit If You:
  • Have 2โ€“6+ years of experience in computer vision, CVML, or related applied AI fields

  • Are fluent in tools like OpenCV, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or MediaPipe

  • Have experience working with video data, multi-view camera inputs, or 3D point clouds

  • Have built and deployed CV models in real-world environments (even messy, imperfect ones)

  • Are excited about the intersection of AI + physical worldโ€”not just screen-based products

  • Bonus: Have experience with spatial computing, AR, or platforms like Meta Quest, Unity, or Unreal

  • Bonus: Have worked at companies like Waymo, Cruise, Tesla, Meta, or in research-driven CV roles

Why Join Us?
  • Help define the future of spatial AI in a market ripe for transformation

  • Massive ownership and impact as an early team member

  • Work with high-agency founders and real customers

  • Competitive salary + meaningful equity

  • In-person in SF preferred; remote possible from NYC
