What is the difference between Computer Systems Researcher vs Network Engineer?

AspectComputer Systems ResearcherNetwork Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Computer Science or related field; often requires research experienceBachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Networking, or related; certifications like CCNA or CCNP
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, R&D departmentsCorporate offices, data centers, network operations centers
Industry UsageAcademic, research institutions, tech companiesTelecommunications, IT services, enterprise networks
Primary FocusDeveloping new computing technologies, algorithms, and systemsDesigning, implementing, and maintaining computer networks

The main difference between a Computer Systems Researcher and a Network Engineer lies in their focus. Computer Systems Researchers primarily work on developing new computing technologies and systems in research environments, while Network Engineers focus on designing and maintaining network infrastructure in operational settings. Both roles require technical expertise, but their goals and work environments differ significantly.

What does a computer systems researcher do?

A computer systems researcher studies and develops computer hardware and software systems to improve performance, security, and efficiency. They analyze existing systems, design new architectures, and often use programming, data analysis, and modeling tools to solve complex technical problems. This role typically requires strong technical skills and knowledge of computer science principles.

Job description

Tharros is seeking a Tactical Network and Computer Systems Architect to design and implement weapons systems airborne and air-to-ground data communications networks and operating systems supporting NAWCAD Cyber Warfare Division programs at NAS Patuxent River, MD.

The Architect role requires specialized expertise in weapons systems network design, emulation/virtualization, and security architecture. The Architect acts as functional team lead for teams performing weapons systems network architecture functions, coordinating cross-functional planning between weapons systems networks, test and evaluation networks, and data communications infrastructure.

  • Design and implement weapons systems airborne and air-to-ground data communications networks and operating systems
  • Perform weapons systems data network emulation/virtualization, analysis, and planning
  • Design weapons systems and associated network and computer security measures
  • Analyze systems, sensor, network and server resource consumption and control user access
  • Install and upgrade systems software and maintain software configuration management
  • Assist in network emulation/virtualization, analysis, planning, and coordination between weapons systems networks, associated test and evaluation networks, and data communications hardware and software
  • Research and recommend network and data communications hardware and software for weapons systems applications
  • Coordinate and oversee the tasking of other team members performing architecture functions.
  • Track project progress and participate in planning projects, resourcing, and events.
