What is a computer system validation?

A Computer System Validation (CSV) job involves ensuring that computer systems used in regulated industries, such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices, meet compliance and regulatory requirements. CSV professionals develop and execute validation protocols to confirm that software, hardware, and processes function as intended and maintain data integrity. They work with quality assurance, IT, and regulatory teams to document compliance with standards like FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and GxP. This role is critical in maintaining system reliability, product quality, and patient safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in computer system validation, and why are they important?

To excel in Computer System Validation, candidates typically need a background in computer science, engineering, or life sciences, with expertise in validating software and systems in regulated environments such as pharmaceuticals or medical devices. Familiarity with tools like validation documentation software, GAMP 5 guidelines, FDA 21 CFR Part 11 regulations, and potentially certifications like CSV Professional or Six Sigma is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help professionals work collaboratively and document findings precisely. These abilities ensure compliance, data integrity, and the reliability of computerized systems critical to safety and quality.

What are some typical challenges faced in computer system validation roles?

Professionals in Computer System Validation often encounter challenges such as keeping up with evolving regulatory requirements, ensuring complete and accurate documentation, and coordinating with cross-functional teams to implement validation protocols. Principal Systems Engineer / System Architect

Madison, WI | Full-Time | Onsite
Up to $190,000 + Annual Bonus

Define the technical architecture of a product platform that doesn't exist yet.

Kelly Engineering is partnering with an industry-leading medical device manufacturer to identify an experienced System Architect to lead the technical vision and end-to-end architecture of a next-generation product platform.

This is a rare opportunity to join at the beginning of a major product development initiative. As the first technical hire on a newly formed engineering team, you'll establish the system architecture, influence key technology decisions, and help shape the engineering organization that brings the platform to market.

If you're energized by solving complex engineering challenges, integrating multiple engineering disciplines, and bringing innovative products from concept through production, we'd love to speak with you.

Position Highlights
  • Compensation up to $190,000 + Annual Bonus

  • Madison, Wisconsin

  • Full-Time Onsite Position

  • Relocation assistance available for qualified candidates

  • No current or future visa sponsorship available

  • Rare opportunity to architect an entirely new product platform from the ground up

What You'll Do
  • Define the end-to-end architecture for a complex multidisciplinary product platform.

  • Establish system requirements, subsystem definitions, interfaces, and integration strategies.

  • Drive collaboration across electrical, mechanical, optical, embedded, and software engineering teams.

  • Lead architecture trade-off decisions balancing performance, manufacturability, reliability, scalability, usability, and cost.

  • Translate customer and business needs into scalable technical solutions.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend system-level architecture decisions.

  • Identify and mitigate technical risks throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Participate in rapid prototyping, system integration, validation, and technical problem solving.

  • Collaborate with Product Management, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, and Engineering teams from concept through production.

  • Provide technical leadership through influence, collaboration, and engineering expertise.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.

  • 15+ years designing and developing complex physical products.

  • 5+ years leading system architecture, subsystem definition, and product integration.

  • Proven success bringing products from concept through production.

  • Strong experience integrating hardware and software within complex electromechanical systems.

  • Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills.

  • Ability to travel approximately 10–15% as needed.

Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following is highly desirable:

  • Medical Device Development

  • Consumer Electronics

  • Robotics

  • Embedded Systems

  • Imaging Technologies

  • Industrial Automation

  • Aerospace

  • Highly integrated hardware/software products

Why This Opportunity?

Most System Architect opportunities focus on improving an existing product.

This opportunity gives you the chance to help build what's next.

You'll play a foundational role in defining the technical architecture of a new product platform while influencing future engineering decisions, technology selection, and long-term product strategy. If you're looking for an opportunity where your technical expertise will have a lasting impact, we'd love to connect.
