Job description

Summary
As a Space Reactors Lead System Engineer, you will lead systems engineering for NASA's lunar reactor and space nuclear systems, directing multidisciplinary teams across NASA, industry, and government agencies. You will develop and tailor systems engineering approaches to integrate complex aerospace systems, including space fission systems, while working closely with program management, engineering leads, and contractors to define requirements, interfaces, and verification plans.

  • Performs engineering development of complex aerospace systems, including design and operational requirements definition, hardware and/or software development, testing, verification, safety, integration, and certification.
  • Integrates unique systems for space nuclear missions and program elements to satisfy vehicle design and operational requirements, incorporating systems from NASA, industry, and government agencies including the Department of Energy.
  • Ensures effective technology transfer and reuse by integrating systems across space nuclear missions as appropriate.
  • Develops and integrates flight vehicle systems for complex spaceflight missions, resolving difficult technical, project management, and organizational problems through innovative approaches.
  • Leads large, multidisciplinary teams of NASA, industry, and government employees to ensure effective engineering management and integration in aerospace flight system development, with emphasis on space fission systems.
  • Defines and coordinates independent review type and structure, sets milestones, leads product development by managing the work of subordinate, secondary and matrixed resources and tracks the technical baseline accordingly
  • Evaluating in-house and contractor proposals for multi-element space flight systems and providing technical leadership and direction of contracts involving the design, development, integration, test, evaluation, operation of the systems.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify at the GS-15 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level:
  • Developing and negotiating requirements and interfaces for complex space systems, with emphasis on lunar surface systems including launch and lander transportation;
  • Leading systems engineering and integration activities for major aerospace projects, including flight system development, testing, verification, and validation, and providing process tailoring recommendations to project leadership;
  • Providing systems engineering leadership on a major spaceflight effort requiring multi-center coordination and sustained engagement with other government agencies.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
