Computer System Programmer information

What is a computer system programmer?

Computer system programmers are professionals who write, test, and maintain the software that enables computers and networks to function effectively. They typically work on system-level software such as operating systems, network distribution software, and compilers, ensuring that computer hardware and software work seamlessly together. Their role often involves debugging, updating, and optimizing existing code to improve system performance and security. Computer system programmers may also collaborate with hardware engineers and other IT professionals to integrate new technologies into existing systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer system programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer System Programmer, you need strong programming abilities in languages such as C, C++, or Java, along with a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with operating systems, integrated development environments (IDEs), and version control systems like Git is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective problem-solving are essential soft skills that distinguish top performers. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, efficient, and maintainable systems that meet organizational and user needs.

What are the typical collaboration dynamics between computer system programmers and other IT professionals?

Computer system programmers frequently collaborate with system analysts, network engineers, and software developers to ensure that new or modified systems integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure. They often participate in meetings to discuss technical requirements, troubleshoot issues alongside IT support teams, and work closely with quality assurance professionals to test system functionality. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential, as these collaborations are crucial for identifying potential problems early and ensuring project success.

What is the difference between Computer System Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectComputer System ProgrammerSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in computer science or related field; certifications like CompTIA or Microsoft may be beneficialSimilar educational background; often holds degrees in computer science, software engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentWorks mainly in IT departments, focusing on system-level programming, operating systems, and hardware integrationWorks in various industries, developing applications, web, mobile, or enterprise software
Industry UsageCommonly employed in technology firms, government agencies, and organizations with complex IT infrastructureWidely used across tech companies, startups, and businesses developing consumer or enterprise software

While both roles require programming skills and a similar educational background, Computer System Programmers focus on system-level software and hardware integration, whereas Software Developers create applications and user-facing software solutions.

How much does a computer system programmer get paid?

Computer system programmers typically earn a median annual salary of around $90,000, with salaries ranging from approximately $60,000 to over $120,000 depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers with certifications and knowledge of specific programming languages or systems may earn higher wages.

Is a computer system programmer a good career?

A computer system programmer is a skilled professional who develops and maintains software for computer systems, often requiring knowledge of programming languages, operating systems, and hardware interactions. The role offers steady employment opportunities, competitive salaries, and the potential for specialization in areas like embedded systems or cybersecurity. Success in this career typically depends on continuous learning and staying updated with evolving technologies.

Is computer system programming in demand?

Computer system programmers are in steady demand due to ongoing needs for maintaining and developing operating systems, embedded systems, and enterprise software. Skills in programming languages like C, C++, and knowledge of hardware interactions increase employability, especially in technology and manufacturing sectors.

What does a computer system programmer do?

A computer system programmer develops, tests, and maintains system software such as operating systems, device drivers, and utility programs. They write code primarily in languages like C or Assembly, troubleshoot system issues, and ensure software interacts efficiently with hardware components. Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of computer architecture are essential for this role.

Job description

About Analog Devices

Analog Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADI) is a global semiconductor leader that bridges the physical and digital worlds to enable breakthroughs at the Intelligent Edge. ADI combines analog, digital, AI, and software technologies into solutions that combat climate change, reliably connect humans and the world, and help drive advancements in automation and robotics, mobility, healthcare, energy and data centers. With revenue of more than $11 billion in FY25, ADI ensures today's innovators stay Ahead of What's Possible. Learn more at www.analog.comand on LinkedIn and X.

Analog Devices is seeking a Principal Field Robotics System Engineer to operate at the intersection of hands-on robotic system expertise, customer engagement, and platform enablement.

You will act as a system-level domain expert in the field, supporting customers from early architecture discussions through proof-of-concept (PoC), evaluation, and system support and integration, accelerating adoption of ADI technologies in real-world robotic systems.

This is a high-impact, customer-facing role focused on:

  • Scaling platform and solution engagements across robotics ecosystems (OEMs, disruptors, and partners), in collaboration with ADI BUs, Sales, Software, ADI Garage, Innovation Hubs, and AI teams.
  • Co-creating with customers and demonstrating value proposition
  • Providing domain expertise across robotic subsystems and platforms (motion, sensing, perception, control, power)
  • Accelerating customer decision cycles and drive design wins

This role supports priority segments including industrial robotics, humanoids, mobile robots, and service robotics, and is central to ADI's strategy to move up the value stack-from components to subsystems and platforms.

Success in this role requires the ability to operate across complex ecosystems, influence technical and business stakeholders, and translate platform capabilities into working PoCs that accelerate customer adoption. At its core, this role executes ADI's platforms & solutions strategy in the field-driving near-term business impact while scaling repeatable system solutions and strengthening ADI position within key robotics ecosystems.

Responsibilities
  • Build and integrate proof-of-concepts, demos, and reference systems that translate ADI platform capabilities into compelling system-level demonstrations, clearly showcasing performance, scalability, and customer value
  • Work hands-on with robotic subsystems and platforms (motion, sensing, perception, control) aligned to real-world customer use cases
  • Support system bring-up, integration, and debugging across hardware, software, and control layers
  • Lead ADI Catalyst (collaboration hubs) engagements and customer co-creation activities; including workshops and boot camps
  • Lead strategic platform engagements with robotics companies, disruptors, and ecosystem partners - from early concept through deployment
  • Develop and apply deep expertise across key areas of technology including motion & actuation, multimodal sensing, real-time control, embedded compute / edge AI, and power systems, with considerations for functional safety
  • Act as the technical bridge between customers, Sales, FAEs, and Business Units
  • Provide guidance on system architecture trade-offs (system partition, performance, cost, power, scalability)
  • Convert engagements into design wins and scalable opportunities across accounts
  • Represent ADI through customer engagements, technical forums, and industry events
  • Contribute to enablement and mentorship of FAEs and sales teams in system-level engagements
