Job description

TITLE: IT Laboratory Support Technician
LOCATION: Emeryville, CA (onsite)
POSITION: Contract to hire
Job Description:
The IT Laboratory Support Technician will focus on hardware and software systems support for scientific applications and tools. They will keep track of the assets for the labs and work with them on upcoming maintenances. Respond to assignment through tickets in the Jira IT Service Management tool. The Lab Support Tech will work independently and collaboratively with other team members to successfully perform support on Microsoft platforms. The self-motivated candidate will follow defined policies and procedures as well as help build our Knowledge Database.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide critical day-to-day IT support in a scientific laboratory environment
  • Work with scientists and computer support colleagues to evaluate, develop, implement and maintain systems to improve laboratory processes, streamline workflows, and generally increase productivity in laboratory operations
  • Work very closely with vendors, especially when implementing new features and systems. Develop excellent working relationships with them, and learn as much as possible from them
  • Manage, configure, and troubleshoot systems, applications, and desktop issues
  • Maintain backups of lab computers and pay attention to the backups
  • Demonstrate ownership of the entire lifecycle of lab applications
  • Manage application licenses and renewals
  • Create & update documentation on equipment, configurations and procedures.
  • Work on other tickets coming into IT Help desk to resolve customer issues within SLAs
  • Teach I.T. colleagues about your areas of expertise and how to back you up.
  • Continually focus on developing technical expertise through self-development of skills and knowledge. Read the documentation. Study and exercise the applications in your test environment.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned
Requirements
  • A sound technical background with a minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in a Service or IT environment.
  • Have experience in providing top-notch customer service
  • 3 years of experience supporting a scientific laboratory environment. Will consider senior systems administrators with advanced skills and solid experience outside a lab environment.
  • Excellent Communication and documentation skills (create Knowledge articles)
  • Solid knowledge of fundamentals: name resolution, TCP/IP, Windows security, authentication
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • 5 years of experience supporting a networked computer environment with Windows 7/XP desktop and Windows 2003/2008 server
  • Experience as technical and business liaison between end-users and software vendors a plus
  • Systems Administration experience with instrumentation and software such as Agilent ChemStation, Dionex Chromeleon, Mettler LabX, and backup software a plus
  • Experience working with lab instrument software such as Biocel, Beckman, National Instruments, Tecan, Sciex Analyst, Bruker, TA-DSC, TA-DMA, JKem control module, MBraun drybox, etc., a plus
