Computer Scientist Intern information

What does a computer scientist intern do?

A Computer Scientist Intern typically supports software development, research, or data analysis projects within a technology or research-focused organization. Their tasks may include coding, testing software, analyzing datasets, and collaborating with experienced computer scientists to solve technical problems. Interns gain practical experience, learn new programming languages or tools, and contribute to real-world projects. This role helps bridge academic learning with hands-on industry experience, preparing interns for full-time roles in computer science.

What types of projects do computer scientist interns typically work on, and how much autonomy can I expect?

As a Computer Scientist Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects ranging from software development and algorithm optimization to data analysis and research-based tasks. While you will receive guidance from senior team members and mentors, interns are often encouraged to take ownership of specific project components and contribute original ideas. The level of autonomy varies by company, but most programs emphasize collaborative problem-solving, regular check-ins, and opportunities to present your work. This structure allows interns to develop technical skills, gain practical experience, and build professional relationships within multidisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer scientist intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Scientist Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, often demonstrated through coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with languages like Python, Java, or C++, and experience using version control systems such as Git, are typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this role. These skills ensure interns can contribute effectively to projects, adapt to new technologies, and work collaboratively within technical teams.

The Opportunity

Build the Future with Us
Step into the world of power systems and help shape the infrastructure that keeps communities connected. As an Electrical Engineering Intern (Fall 2026) with our Substation Engineering team in the Thornhill office, you'll support real-world substation projects-learning from experienced engineers while contributing to practical designs, analysis, and project delivery. You'll gain hands-on exposure to how electrical engineering decisions translate into safe, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions.

Your Impact

  • Support substation engineering deliverables by assisting with calculations, technical notes, and design documentation.
  • Prepare and update drawings, single-line diagrams, and design markups in collaboration with designers and engineers.
  • Assist with power system studies and analyses (e.g., load flow, short circuit, equipment sizing) under supervision.
  • Compile and organize project information (specifications, standards, vendor data, and field notes) to help keep designs accurate and current.
  • Participate in internal coordination and project meetings, capturing key actions and supporting follow-through.
  • Contribute to quality checks by reviewing documents for completeness, consistency, and alignment with project requirements.
  • Learn and apply safe work practices and support project teams during occasional site visits when required.

The Skills That Set You Apart

  • Currently enrolled in a university Electrical Engineering program (co-op/internship term available for Fall 2026).
  • Foundational understanding of power systems concepts (e.g., three-phase systems, transformers, protection basics, equipment ratings).
  • Experience or coursework exposure to technical documentation such as single-line diagrams, schematics, or drawing sets.
  • Working knowledge of common engineering tools (e.g., Excel) and comfort learning new software quickly (CAD or power system tools are an asset).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (engineering, drafting/design, project management).
  • Strong attention to detail with an organized approach to managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Willingness to follow safety procedures and participate in field/site work when needed (as applicable to project requirements).
