What is a computer science winter internship?

A Computer Science Winter Internship is a short-term, hands-on learning opportunity for students to gain practical experience in software development, data science, cybersecurity, or other tech fields. Typically lasting a few months during the winter break, interns work on real-world projects, collaborate with professionals, and enhance their technical and problem-solving skills. These internships help students build their resumes, expand their industry network, and sometimes lead to full-time job offers.

What kinds of projects or tasks are typically assigned during a computer science winter internship?

During a Computer Science Winter Internship, interns commonly work on real-world projects such as developing software features, debugging code, creating test cases, or assisting with documentation. The tasks can range from individual assignments to collaborative efforts with other engineers or product teams, depending on the organization's needs. Interns often have the opportunity to attend technical meetings, participate in code reviews, and learn industry best practices firsthand. This structure provides valuable exposure to professional workflows and helps interns build practical skills for future career advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a computer science winter internship?

A Computer Science Winter Internship typically requires a foundational understanding of programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++, alongside coursework or projects in algorithms, data structures, or software development. Interns often use version control systems like Git, development environments such as Visual Studio Code, and may benefit from certifications in relevant technologies or programming languages. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and the ability to communicate effectively within a team are important soft skills. These competencies are crucial for successfully contributing to technical projects, adapting to new technologies, and collaborating in dynamic work environments.

Old Mission does not seek capital from outside investors, allowing us the flexibility to aggressively invest in our team members and keep them engaged in the firm's growth.
About the Position
Our internship program is geared for current students who want to work alongside our talented software engineers creating impactful solutions to further the firm's market initiatives. If you're looking to make an immediate contribution this summer and get a firsthand look at building out our business, feel free to apply today!
What you will get to do
  • Gain exposure to how trading works, from the underlying theory to the systems and tools we build around it
  • Regular sessions with senior engineers covering the fundamentals of the systems and tools we use
  • Get direct feedback from the engineers you're working alongside, learning in real time
  • Work directly with engineers, traders, and other teams on projects that matter to the firm day to day

Required Skills
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a similar technical field
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • A strong work ethic and ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment
  • At least junior standing, with a graduation date of December 2027 or May 2028
  • Comfortable with one or more of C++, Python or TypeScript
  • A solid grasp of computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, systems
  • Genuine interest in markets and how software supports them
  • Ability to start the internship on June 1, 2027
  • No finance experience is required

Benefits and Perks
  • Fully stocked kitchen; free breakfast and lunch every day on-site
  • Corporate housing at no cost to you
  • Access to people across the firm - traders, researchers, and engineers
