Job description

Position Summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, seeks to hire a Research Specialist to support basic science research by managing genetically engineered mouse colonies, including breeding coordination, animal tracking, weaning, ear tagging, tissue collection, and collaboration with the animal facility. The role also involves conducting research projects according to established protocols, performing PCR-based genotyping and data analysis, maintaining research databases and accurate records, managing laboratory inventory and equipment, organizing sample storage, contributing to research reports and grant-related documentation, and ensuring compliance with biosafety and IACUC regulations.

General Responsibilities

  • Collects, records and analyzes preliminary data for behavioral and clinical research programs.

  • Recruits, schedules, and performs follow-up with research subjects as protocols dictate.

  • Maintains current contact information for all study participants.

  • Under supervision, may perform a variety of psychometric and/or medical procedures.

  • Data collection activities may require that data be processed from multiple sites.

  • May assist in compiling, editing, and proofing written reports for IRB approval, contract progress reports, and grant submissions.

  • This position may perform data analysis using a variety of software packages and statistical methods.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Manage genetically engineered mouse colonies by establishing and monitoring breeding schemes, maintaining breeding and experimental cage records, performing weaning and ear tagging, collecting tissues for genotyping, and maintaining communication with the animal facility to support research objectives.

  2. Perform PCR-based genotyping, gel electrophoresis, and related molecular biology procedures to identify and track transgenic and knockout mouse lines.

  3. Maintain accurate genotyping records and ensure data quality and reproducibility.

  4. Collect, organize, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data using appropriate research methodologies and analytical techniques.

  5. Maintain research databases, laboratory records, and documentation to ensure data integrity, confidentiality, regulatory compliance, and accurate reporting of research finding.

  6. Manage laboratory inventory, order and track supplies, maintain equipment, organize freezer and sample storage systems, and ensure compliance with biosafety, animal care, and IACUC requirements.

  7. Contribute to grant proposals, progress reports, and other funding-related documentation by compiling data, summarizing results, and supporting reporting requirements.

  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Hourly Range:   $ 15.00- $21.95

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and three (3) years of related experience required.
