Who We Are
The mission of the Institute for Social Research (ISR), the premier university-based social science research institute in the world, includes developing, conducting, and disseminating groundbreaking social science research, as well as training future generations of social scientists. ISR research and training is conducted across the five centers through the efforts of more than 350 primary and supplemental faculty, 600 regular staff, and upwards of 1,000 contingent (temporary) staff located across the country. Each of the Institute's five research centers has unique human resources needs and strategies.
Job Summary
The Institute for Social Research (ISR) is searching for an HR Assistant to join the Human Resources team. You will provide customer-focused HR assistance to research centers, handling administrative and transactional support for HR processes.
Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.
Responsibilities*
  • Process HR transaction requests (such as hires, terminations, transfers, changes, additional pays, etc.) in HRIS for student and non-student temporary positions as well as staff.
  • Will claim, update, and close out tickets using the TDX Team Dynamix Case Management system for communicating with requestors and for tracking.
  • Use HR automated tools, gather information and metrics, and audit data for forms.
  • Respond to general HR inquiries, interpret policies and procedures, and provide advice. Coordinate with the Shared Services Center and Payroll when needed.
  • Assist HR staff with training and other HR related projects and administrative duties as needed.
  • Handle inquiries for HR compliance requests received.
  • Post temporary jobs, assist with networking jobs based upon sourcing goals, and assist with reference checks as requested in consultation with other HR team members.
  • Assist with new employee hiring processes including submission and tracking of remote I-9 requests as needed. Track and notify units of I-9 expiration dates.
  • Assist with offboarding processes.
  • Provide general administrative support, including filing, ordering office supplies, and purchasing card reconciliation.
  • Maintain employee records, files, confidential documents and information in compliance with legal requirements, University protocols, and retention requirements.
  • Perform periodic audits of files and data including email groups, staff lists, and personnel files.
  • Answer and resolve inquiries via phone, email, and from walk-in guests. Creating a welcoming atmosphere and providing excellent customer service for the HR team in all interactions with faculty, staff, students, and guests.
  • First point of contact for employees requiring HR services, which requires on-site presence most days.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*
  • High school degree with at least 2 years of related HR experience
  • Proficient standard office computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office, particularly excel, Google)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with candidates and employees with diverse backgrounds at all levels of the organization
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize multiple concurrent duties
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Familiarity of an Applicant Tracking System
  • Familiarity of Human Resource Information System
  • Effective communication skills
Desired Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Communications, Psychology, or a related field
  • Experience working with an Applicant Tracking System

Modes of Work

Work Schedule
This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, working at least three days per week on-site in Ann Arbor, MI after an initial training period.
