Job description

A full-time Research Assistant III position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jon Houck at The Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Research Assistant III will work as part of a team on several federally-funded clinical research studies, including studies of non-invasive brain stimulation for the treatment of substance use disorder and studies designed to evaluate the behavioral and physiological effects of nicotine and tobacco use in human research participants, as well as other studies as needed. This is an in-person role that will involve providing analysis, preparation and quality control of data for research studies. The RA III will perform phlebotomy, collect and record vital signs, and other procedures as necessary. They will also oversee, organize, and execute daily activities for research studies including the recruitment of study participants. They will also ensure proper compliance with Institutional Review Board (IRB) and other regulatory agencies. Finally, they will inspect and set quality assurance testing models for the analysis of raw data, data in process, and finished data.


The position's work schedule is determined by research participant availability and will involve occasional evening or weekend participant appointments, with core working hours of 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Applicants should have strong communication and interpersonal skills, excellent attention to detail including the ability to closely follow study procedures, and be able to work productively as part of a team. Must have competence with or be able to learn to work with departmental computer systems including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.


Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or a related research field and 2 years or more of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities and have been attained.

Must have a demonstrated understanding of the principals, methods and procedures of basic medical and/or clinical research as well as the ability to understand and follow basic scientific research protocols and procedures

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals. Strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office, as well as the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed.

Must be able to pass a background check.

  • A master of science degree (M.S., M.Sc.) is preferred.
  • Experience with REDCap is preferred.
  • Two years of recent experience performing in-person procedures with clinical research participants is preferred.
  • Emergency medical services certification (e.g., EMT-B) is preferred.
  • CCRP, CCRC, or similar clinical research certification is preferred. If applicant does not have a current clinical research certification, applicant must meet requirements to apply for certification upon hire, and obtain the certification (at company's cost) within a year.

Work is performed in a dry laboratory environment.  Will operate standard office equipment and will frequently stand, walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, perform repetitive motions and occasionally lift objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.  May interact with research participants.
