What does a computer science modeling simulation engineer do?

A Computer Science Modeling Simulation Engineer designs, develops, and implements computer-based models and simulations to analyze complex systems or predict their behavior. They use programming, mathematical modeling, and data analysis techniques to create virtual representations of real-world processes, such as physical phenomena, engineering systems, or business operations. Their work helps organizations test scenarios, optimize performance, and make better decisions without the risks or costs of real-world experimentation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer science modeling simulation engineer?

To thrive as a Computer Science Modeling Simulation Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, C++, or MATLAB), a solid foundation in mathematics, and typically a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software (e.g., Simulink, Arena) and experience using modeling tools or high-performance computing environments are highly valued. Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills help you interpret complex systems and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for developing accurate models, optimizing simulations, and delivering actionable insights for engineering or research projects.

What are some common challenges faced by computer science modeling simulation engineers when integrating new models into existing systems?

Computer Science Modeling Simulation Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new models, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, managing data consistency, and maintaining computational efficiency. These professionals must rigorously test models to prevent disruptions in system performance, and often collaborate closely with software developers, data scientists, and stakeholders to address integration issues. Effective communication and thorough documentation are crucial to smoothly incorporate new simulations into complex, real-world environments.

Job Description:
Cortina Solutions is seeking a high-impact Lead Modeling and Simulation Engineer to lead the execution of a complex contract supporting the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD). You must be ready to own the mission, overseeing complex, multi-domain efforts that shape the future of naval warfare technology. The ideal candidate will be expected to lead with Excellence, serve with Integrity, and approach every problem with a drive to Get Things Done.
The Lead Modeling and Simulation Engineer provides advanced simulation and modeling support for complex engineering projects, leveraging virtual environments to evaluate system performance, durability, safety, and functionality. This role applies simulation-based engineering techniques to support design, analysis, and decision-making across a wide range of engineering applications.
Responsibilities include developing and executing computer simulations, such as probabilistic models, software-in-the-loop (SIL), and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations, to assess engineering solutions under varied operational conditions. The position utilizes contemporary programming languages, including C++ and Fortran, to model dynamic, multi-variable scenarios and simulated environments. The role also develops virtual data visualization products, including virtual and augmented reality applications, to represent real-time simulation results and enhance stakeholder understanding. Support for simulation development using the Unity game engine is a key component of this position.
Job Requirements:
  • 10+ years of relevant civilian or military professional experience.
  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Modeling and Simulation, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience using computer simulation technologies, including probabilistic, SIL, and HIL simulations.
  • Proficiency in contemporary programming languages including C++ and Fortran for simulation and modeling.
  • Experience developing virtual data visualization products to display real-time simulation results.
  • Ability to support modeling of complex systems with multiple changing variables.
  • Active DOD Secret clearance.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Modeling and Simulation, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience developing simulations using the Unity game engine.
  • Experience with virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) application development.

Benefits:
Cortina Solutions is committed to offering comprehensive and affordable benefits to employees and their families.
