Job description


SUMMARY
Mortenson is seeking an Associate Data Scientist to provide dedicated support to the Estimating organization, focused on automating workflows, predictive modeling, data visualizations, and custom AI/ML solutions. This role is ideal for recent graduates with a background in data science, data analytics, artificial intelligence, or a related field.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Understand the assigned business challenge and develop a plan to identify, obtain, and analyze the necessary data to drive improved business performance in existing and new estimating processes
  • Translate business requirements into business-ready analytics and AI solutions, including automated data workflows between source systems and enterprise data infrastructure
  • Collect, clean, and analyze data from various sources including estimating platforms, project management systems, financial records, and field operations
  • Conduct statistical analyses, randomized controlled trials, and predictive modeling
  • Stay current with industry trends and best practices in data science, AI, and construction analytics
  • Develop, analyze, and model estimating, operational, economic, and other organizational data
  • Test and evaluate AI & ML solutions and functionalities within and beyond enterprise solutions
  • Review program data consistently to provide corrective action, when necessary, based on information collected and current trends to maximize business performance
  • Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels
  • All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in data science, data analytics, statistics, computer science, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a data science or AI function, preferably an internship in applied AI or data science
  • Proficiency with predictive modeling, statistical analysis, data mining, and data visualization
  • Experience with LLMs, multimodal models, or generative AI/ML (eg. Azure AI Foundry, Google Vertex)
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, or similar coding languages and platforms including IDE platforms such as Jupyter Notebook, Spyder, Visual Studio Code
  • Experience working with ML Frameworks, Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and related data tools
  • Prior work or experience in construction, architecture, engineering, or real estate development, preferred
  • Ability to think analytically with great attention to detail
  • Shown experience in following complex instructions
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Willingness to advance business ideas that are sometimes unstructured and without clearly defined outcomes
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Shown understanding of business operations
  • Active listening skills and effective communication including an openness to diverse input and feedback
  • Ability to travel approximately 10%

The base pay range for this role is Min $69,900 - Max $104,900. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%).
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson's incentive plan.
