Computer Science Internship information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Science Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in programming, algorithms, and data structures, often supported by progress toward a computer science degree. Familiarity with coding languages such as Python, Java, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns stand out in collaborative environments. These skills and qualities are essential because they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to new technologies, and work efficiently within a development team.

What types of projects do Computer Science interns typically work on, and how much autonomy can I expect?

Computer Science interns often contribute to real-world projects such as developing new software features, debugging code, automating processes, or supporting infrastructure. While the level of autonomy varies by company, interns are generally given meaningful tasks and encouraged to collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams. You'll likely participate in code reviews, agile sprints, and team meetings, gaining hands-on experience and feedback. Many organizations assign mentors to guide interns, helping them balance independence with structured learning and support.

What is a computer science internship?

A computer science internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of computer science. Interns typically work on real-world projects, assisting with programming, software development, data analysis, or IT support under the supervision of experienced professionals. These internships provide valuable hands-on skills, networking opportunities, and insight into potential career paths within technology industries.

What is the difference between Computer Science Internship vs Software Developer Intern?

AspectComputer Science InternshipSoftware Developer Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in CS or related fieldSame as CS internship, often students or recent grads
Work EnvironmentVaries across tech companies, research labs, startupsPrimarily software development teams in tech firms
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across academia, industry, research projectsPrimarily in software development companies and tech industry
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding internship opportunities in CSComparing software development internship roles

Both Computer Science Internships and Software Developer Internships target students or recent graduates interested in tech. While CS internships may include research, data analysis, or broader technical roles, Software Developer Internships focus specifically on coding and software creation. The choice depends on your career goals and the specific skills you want to develop.

Job description

Internship - Research Intern (Agentic Learning, Memory & Neurosymbolic Reasoning)

Castelldefels (Barcelona), Spain

About Us

Axiomatic AI is building a new class of AI systems designed to reason with the rigor of the scientific method. By combining deep learning with formal logic and physics-based modeling, we create verifiable, interpretable AI systems that collaborate with and support human researchers in high-stakes scientific and engineering workflows.

Our mission, 30×30, is to deliver a 30× improvement in the speed, accessibility, and cost of semiconductor and photonic hardware development by 2030.

We aim to revolutionize hardware design and simulation in these industries and are building a team of highly motivated professionals to bring these innovations from research into commercial products.

Position Overview

We are looking for a Research Intern to support exploratory work on core topics in agentic AI and learning systems. The internship is designed around two main goals: identifying promising research paths and producing strong research output, potentially including a paper submission.

You will contribute to exploratory but highly relevant research directions within KAMAS (Knowledge, Agents, Memory and Systems), a team focused on building knowledge-driven, verifiable agentic AI systems. Possible investigation paths include:

  • Teacher/student interaction dynamics in learning processes, particularly in long-term settings where the student evolves through sustained interaction with a teacher;
  • The interaction between external and parametric memory, focusing on how to connect them and enable effective bidirectional information flow;
  • Neurosymbolic approaches to validation and verification (V&V) for agentic reasoning

These directions are not exhaustive. Additional research paths may be defined based on the candidate's background, interests, and emerging project needs

This role is ideal for a candidate who enjoys moving between conceptual research, experimental work, and hands-on model development.

Your Mission

  • Contribute to exploratory research in agentic AI and learning systems, aligned with KAMAS goals and research priorities
  • Design, implement, and run experiments to evaluate promising research directions
  • Synthesize findings into internal documents and presentations, and potentially publications.

Key Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field
  • Strong proficiency in Python
  • Strong foundation in machine learning research and experimental design
  • Ability to work independently on exploratory research problems
  • Strong analytical, research, and communication skills
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Comfort working in a dynamic, fast-paced setting
  • Strong interest in current state-of-the-art AI research, in particular in knowledge and memory systems.
  • Experience or strong interest in reinforcement learning and model fine-tuning, particularly in working with smaller models and efficient training setups

Work Model & Location Expectations

Work model: On-site. Candidates are expected to be based at our Barcelona office. Office location: Carrer d'Esteve Terradas, 1 08860 Castelldefels, Barcelona, Spain Our office is located in the Mediterranean Technology Park, within a university campus environment—just 20 minutes by train from central Barcelona and a 15-minute walk from the beach. Work authorization: Candidates must have (or be able to obtain) work authorization in Spain.
