Computer Science Internship information

What are internship opportunities in computer science?

An internship in computer science provides on-the-job training for students who study computer science. Your duties in this program depend on the focus on the internship. Some interns get experiencing coding and developing software, applications, or website user interfaces. As an intern, you work under the direction of programming and development professionals. Your responsibilities include writing lines of code, testing and debugging software, learning computer languages in a realistic setting, and functioning as part of a team. Other computer science internships focus on providing technical support, cybersecurity services, or administration services as part of an IT team.

What is a computer science internship?

A computer science internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of computer science. Interns typically work on real-world projects, assisting with programming, software development, data analysis, or IT support under the supervision of experienced professionals. These internships provide valuable hands-on skills, networking opportunities, and insight into potential career paths within technology industries.

What types of projects does a computer science intern typically work on, and how much autonomy can I expect?

Computer Science interns often contribute to real-world projects such as developing new software features, debugging code, automating processes, or supporting infrastructure. While the level of autonomy varies by company, interns are generally given meaningful tasks and encouraged to collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams. You'll likely participate in code reviews, agile sprints, and team meetings, gaining hands-on experience and feedback. Many organizations assign mentors to guide interns, helping them balance independence with structured learning and support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer science intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in programming, algorithms, and data structures, often supported by progress toward a computer science degree. Familiarity with coding languages such as Python, Java, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns stand out in collaborative environments. These skills and qualities are essential because they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to new technologies, and work efficiently within a development team.

Job description

Forvia, a sustainable mobility technology leader New trends and expectations are reshaping the automotive industry. Inspired by the exciting new challenges associated with this revolution, FORVIA anticipates the future of mobility developing cutting-edge solutions for smart life on board and sustainable mobility. If you're willing to contribute and create value for tomorrow's cleaner and smarter mobility, FORVIA is the place to be.

FORVIA is looking for a year-round Sales Intern for its location in Northville, MI Your mission, roles and responsibilities Join our team as a Sales Intern within our Commercial Excellence Lab. The Commercial Excellence Lab is a small team within Sales in our Clarion Electronics division created to bring fresh thinking, analytical talent, and new technology into the way we work. This is not a traditional Sales Intern position.

You will learn how a global automotive business operates from the commercial front line, but your role will go beyond supporting existing processes. You will study how work is performed, identify opportunities for improvement, develop practical solutions, test them with the organization, and help put them into practice. Although this role is based within Sales, its scope is cross-functional.

Commercial performance depends on how effectively Sales works with Finance, Engineering, Program Management, Purchasing, Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, IT, and other functions. We are looking for curious, early-career talent who desire to understand how a complex global organization works with willingness to challenge it constructively. We are more interested in your ability to learn and solve problems than in a long list of existing software certifications.

Responsibilities Participate in recurring sales activities to understand the business, its customers, and its processes (approximately 20-25% of the role). Observe and map how commercial and cross-functional processes are performed in practice. Analyze data to identify inefficiencies, delays, inconsistencies, risks, and improvement opportunities.

Challenge existing ways of working with facts, curiosity, and respect for the people involved. Develop practical tools, models, dashboards, and process improvements to support the successful implementation of new processes. Explore how AI and other technologies can reduce repetitive work and improve decision quality.

Work with different functions to understand the root causes of commercial and organizational problems. Test proposed solutions with selected teams or customer accounts. Measure the impact of improvements and adjust solutions based on feedback.

Prepare and lead workshops to share observations, findings, and recommendations. Assist teams to make faster and better-informed decisions. Document lessons and create solutions that can be scaled across the organization.

Projects May Include: Reduce the time required to prepare and approve customer quotations. Improve sales forecasts and opportunity-probability assessments. Automate recurring reports, meeting preparation, and action tracking.

Improve the quality and usefulness of CRM information. Conduct customer, competitor, and market research to support business insights. Identify duplicated work across Excel, email, PowerPoint, and business systems.

Improve pricing, profitability, and commercial-risk visibility. Strengthen the tracking of customer commitments and commercial recoveries. Simplify cross-functional handoffs and approval processes.

Apply data and technology to improve customer responsiveness and execution. Your profile and competencies to succeed Qualifications: Actively pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree throughout mathematics, economics, physics, computer science, business, statistics, engineering, or related fields. Previous internship or sales experience is not required.

Interest in business, customers, technology, and organizations. Enjoy solving complex problems. Comfortable working with incomplete or imperfect data.

Communicate complex ideas in a simple and structured way. Willingness to understand detailed operational work before proposing changes. Collaborate effectively with people from different functions and backgrounds.

Take ownership and follow ideas through implementation. Comfortable presenting your work and facilitating discussions. Valued Skills and Capabilities Experience with some of the following is helpful but not required: Excel and data analysis.

Power BI or similar visualization tools. Python, SQL, or other analytical tools. Automation tools.

Artificial intelligence applications. Statistical, financial, or economic analysis. Manage complexity, manage ambiguity, optimize work processes.

What You will Gain As part of the Commercial Excellence Lab, you will receive: Direct exposure to a global automotive Sales organization. Access to real customer, commercial, operational, and financial challenges. Experience working across multiple business functions.

Ownership of projects from analysis through implementation. Opportunities to present findings to commercial and functional leadership. Practical experience applying data, technology, and structured problem-solving.

A broad understanding of how a complex international organization competes and makes decisions. Mentorship and feedback from experienced business leaders. The opportunity to create measurable impact early in your career.

The Commercial Excellence Lab is for individuals who do not want to spend the beginning of their careers only observing from the sidelines. You will be expected to learn, question, build, test, communicate, and improve. You will perform some of the foundational work required to understand the business, but you will not be limited to paperwork or routine support.

Your main responsibility will be to help us see what we can improve and work with us to make it happen. What we can do for you At Forvia, you will find an engaging and dynamic environment where you can contribute to the development of sustainable mobility leading technologies. We are the seventh-largest global automotive supplier, employing more than 157,000 people in more than 40 countries which makes a lot of opportunity for career development.
