What are internship opportunities in computer science?
An internship in computer science provides on-the-job training for students who study computer science. Your duties in this program depend on the focus on the internship. Some interns get experiencing coding and developing software, applications, or website user interfaces. As an intern, you work under the direction of programming and development professionals. Your responsibilities include writing lines of code, testing and debugging software, learning computer languages in a realistic setting, and functioning as part of a team. Other computer science internships focus on providing technical support, cybersecurity services, or administration services as part of an IT team.

Job description
Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Junior Systems Engineer to help build, integrate, test, field, and support training and simulation systems that combine computer hardware, electronics, software, displays, controls, sensors, communications interfaces, and other simulator components.
This is a simulator systems integration and support position - not an IT help-desk, network-administration, or purely software-development role. The successful candidate will be comfortable working at the boundary between hardware and software: tracing signals and data, using diagnostic equipment, replacing or configuring components, supporting software loads, and determining whether a problem originates in hardware, software, cabling, configuration, or an external interface.
The Junior Systems Engineer will work alongside engineers, technicians, instructors, and end users in laboratory and field environments. The role requires practical problem-solving, clear documentation, and the ability to support systems through assembly, integration, acceptance testing, operation, maintenance, and repair.
Work Location
This position is based on-site at our DeBary, Florida location. Candidates must be able to work in person; remote work is not available for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Support the assembly, configuration, integration, installation, checkout, and maintenance of training and simulation systems.
Integrate computers, electronic assemblies, displays, operator controls, sensors, input/output devices, audio/video equipment, communications interfaces, power distribution, cabling, and simulation software.
Troubleshoot complete simulator systems and isolate faults to hardware, software, firmware, cabling, power, configuration, data, or interface causes.
Use schematics, wiring diagrams, interface-control documents, system drawings, technical manuals, logs, and diagnostic data to investigate problems.
Use common electronic and computer test equipment, such as digital multimeters, cable testers, oscilloscopes, logic or protocol analyzers, and manufacturer diagnostic tools, as applicable.
Install, configure, update, and validate operating systems, drivers, firmware, simulation applications, databases, and software releases that are part of the simulator baseline.
Perform functional testing, integration testing, acceptance testing, regression testing, and verification after repairs or configuration changes.
Support live training events, demonstrations, customer acceptance activities, and field service visits; respond to operator-reported discrepancies and restore systems to service.
Document system configurations, interfaces, test results, maintenance actions, failure analysis, corrective actions, and known issues.
Assist with technical refreshes, component substitutions, obsolescence issues, and upgrades while maintaining compatibility with the approved system configuration.
Coordinate effectively with engineers, technicians, vendors, instructors, and customers to resolve multidisciplinary system issues.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or a related technical field; equivalent directly relevant experience may be considered.
Hands-on academic, military, internship, or professional experience assembling, integrating, testing, maintaining, or troubleshooting equipment that combines hardware and software.
Working knowledge of computer hardware, electronic components, peripheral devices, cables and connectors, power supplies, and basic electrical/electronic troubleshooting.
Ability to read and use schematics, wiring diagrams, block diagrams, technical manuals, and system/interface documentation.
Experience using a digital multimeter and other appropriate diagnostic or test equipment.
Familiarity with Windows-based systems, device drivers, software installation, configuration files, and basic command-line or log-based diagnostics.
Basic understanding of Ethernet and serial communications as simulator interfaces. Networking knowledge is useful for system integration, but enterprise network administration is not the focus of this role.
Ability to troubleshoot methodically, work safely around energized equipment, document findings clearly, and follow configuration-control processes.
Ability to communicate professionally with technical teams, operators, and customers and to work effectively in laboratory and field environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience building or supporting military, aviation, vehicle, weapons, industrial, virtual, constructive, or hardware-in-the-loop training or simulation systems.
Experience with simulator operator stations, instructor/operator stations, visual systems, control loading, motion systems, cockpit or vehicle controls, sensors, instrumentation, or real-time input/output.
Experience performing field service, depot repair, equipment installation, acceptance testing, or customer-site technical support.
Familiarity with real-time systems, distributed simulation, DIS, HLA, serial protocols, CAN bus, USB, Ethernet, or other equipment interfaces.
Experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, C#, Python, scripting, or similar tools used to test, interface with, or support physical systems.
Experience with configuration management, maintenance records, issue tracking, test procedures, and technical documentation.
Military electronics, avionics, fire-control, vehicle-maintenance, simulator, or training-device experience is highly valued.
Work Requirements
Ability to work on and around simulator equipment, including bending, kneeling, reaching, and accessing equipment racks or enclosed spaces.
Ability to lift and move equipment or components weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance when appropriate.
Travel will be required for installation, integration, testing, training events, and customer-site support.
Occasional after-hours support may be required during scheduled exercises, test events, or critical system-restoration activities.
The position may require eligibility to access controlled or sensitive technical information and customer facilities, depending on program requirements.
Disclaimer
This description summarizes the general nature and level of work associated with the position. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of every responsibility, duty, qualification, or working condition. Employees may be assigned additional duties or special projects based on operational and business requirements.
