Job description

Description
The Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in experimental and/or theoretical chemistry at the rank of assistant professor or higher depending on qualifications. We seek applications from researchers in a broad range of disciplines within chemical sciences and have a particular interest in those who are pursuing new approaches, including the use of automation in the design, synthesis, and/or characterization of molecules and materials. Research in broadly defined areas including human health, (bio)chemical catalysis, clean energy, and environmental monitoring and remediation would be an excellent fit to the current themes in the department and the college. Carnegie Mellon offers a highly interdisciplinary environment combined with an exciting new focus on modern data-driven/automated approaches. This significant investment is exemplified by recent hires in the areas of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and the construction of the first academic Cloud Lab (https://cloudlab.cmu.edu/) to support experimental efforts in these key frontier scientific areas. The successful applicant will be able to leverage these resources, along with the University's strengths in engineering and computer science, to make unique contributions to the field of chemistry.
Qualifications
We seek scientists who are eager to join and contribute to a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that promotes innovative research, education, and service initiatives. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or a closely related field and preferably relevant post-doctoral research experience. Selection will be based in part on a record of research publications in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals, prospects for obtaining external funding, and the potential to become an outstanding teacher/mentor of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds.
Application Instructions
Application materials, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae (including list of publications), a statement of research interests and teaching philosophy along with a statement on how the candidate will foster diversity, equity, and inclusion should be submitted via the Interfolio site. Applicants are also asked to arrange for a minimum of three confidential letters of recommendation to be uploaded to Interfolio. Review of applications will begin on September 30, 2023 and continue until the position is filled.
The Department of Chemistry is committed to increasing the diversity of its community on a rang of intellectual and cultural dimensions and is part of a College and University that is proactive to include more members of previously under-represented groups. We seek candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service will contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community. Carnegie Mellon University seeks to meet the needs of dual-career couples and is a member of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) that assists with dual-career searches.
