Job description

Assistant/Associate Professor
Program of Actuarial Science and Risk Management
College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The Program of Actuarial Science and Risk Management at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full time, tenure track assistant professor or tenured associate professor position with an anticipated starting date of August 16, 2027.
Illinois has long been recognized as a national leader in actuarial science education. The ASRM program benefits from strong industry partnerships, outstanding student outcomes, continued institutional investment, and an engaged alumni and professional network. This leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment: ASRM has grown into a dynamic and interdisciplinary unit serving over 300 students across undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs, and is currently undergoing the approval process to become an independent department within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. This open-rank position offers an exciting opportunity to witness the birth of a new department and contribute to its promising future.
The successful candidate will contribute to the mission of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois, where curiosity drives impact. As the heart of a leading land-grant research university, LAS brings together diverse disciplines to explore fundamental questions and address complex challenges. We prepare students for a lifetime of inquiry, leadership, and service through innovative research, transformative teaching, and thoughtful mentoring. We strongly encourage applications from those who have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to be effective teachers for our student population with its wide range of backgrounds and experiences, in alignment with the mission of our university. To learn more about the mission, vision, and values of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, visit: https://las.illinois.edu.
Successful candidates are expected to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, establish and maintain an active and independent research program, and provide service to the department, the university and the profession.
Qualifications
Required: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in actuarial science, statistics, risk management and insurance, finance, data science or a closely related field before the position start date. Candidates whose PhD may be delayed but will complete all the Ph.D. requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed at the rank of Instructor. After the Ph.D. requirement is met, the appointment will be changed to Assistant Professor.
Applicants at the assistant professor level must have a promising research agenda and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Applicants at the associate professor level must demonstrate a record of research, teaching and service indicative of a tenured Associate Professor position.
Preferred: Willingness to provide service to the unit. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research sits at the intersection of actuarial science and emerging risk and technology. Ideal candidates will exhibit synergy with current faculty expertise or possess the potential to expand our actuarial curriculum. Experience with administrative roles or curriculum development is considered a significant plus.
Appointment Information
The budgeted salary range for the position is $100,000 to $130,000 at the Assistant Professor level, $130,000 to $160,000 at the Associate Professor level, for a 9-month service basis (paid over 12-months). The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate, including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy. This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee.
