Job Summary:

The Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Specialist support the Manager of HSE in ensuring their assigned Business Unit complies with provincial regulations and company health, safety, and environmental programs. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining HSE systems, providing training, assessing risks, and driving continuous improvement in safety performance. The specialist collaborates with business unit leaders, supports incident response and investigations, and ensures compliance with both corporate and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement and maintain regional HSE management systems (including COR and ISO standards).
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and risk assessments; follow up with corrective actions.
  • Support environmental programs: waste management, pollution control, spill response, and compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Provide training, coaching, and communication on HSE policies and standards.
  • Manage incident reporting, investigations, and worker’s compensation claims/return-to-work programs.
  • Monitor fleet safety (driver risk, GPS data) and preventative maintenance for tools/equipment.
  • Act as backup support for other HSE staff and attend meetings to provide HSE guidance

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of proven working experience in the HSE field within the construction environment, union and non-union.
  • Post-secondary in Health & Safety/Environment or equivalent. CRSP designation (or in progress) is an asset.
  • Detailed working knowledge of provincial Occupational Health & Safety Acts and Regulations, WSIB legislation, fire and electrical codes.
  • Previous experience with HSE systems that meet COR, and familiar with ISO 9001, ISO 1400 and applicable HSE standards.
  • Superior computer skills – Excel, MSWord, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access.
  • Eligibility to obtain OPP, OPS, and OLISS clearances is required.

The salary range is $70,000.00 to $85,000.00 per year. Actual salaries will vary based on factors such as education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as alignment with market data. The base salary is just one component of GDI Ainsworth’s total compensation package, which also includes additional rewards and benefits such as short-term incentives and health insurance, among others.
