Computer Programming Online information

What is computer programming online?

Computer programming online refers to the practice of writing, testing, and deploying computer software using internet-based tools and platforms. This can include learning to code through online courses, collaborating with other programmers remotely, or using cloud-based development environments. Online programming offers flexibility in learning and working from anywhere with an internet connection and often provides access to a wide range of resources and communities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online computer programmer?

To thrive as an Online Computer Programmer, you need a solid grasp of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), algorithmic thinking, and a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and integrated development environments (IDEs) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are standout soft skills in remote programming roles. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code, collaborating virtually, and meeting project deadlines in a dynamic, distributed work environment.

How do online computer programming roles typically collaborate with team members given the remote nature of the position?

In online computer programming roles, collaboration often relies on a combination of digital communication tools such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom, as well as version control platforms like GitHub or GitLab. Team members participate in regular virtual meetings, code reviews, and asynchronous discussions to ensure alignment on project goals and progress. While remote collaboration can present challenges like time zone differences or less face-to-face interaction, most teams establish clear communication protocols and shared documentation to maintain productivity and cohesion. This structure allows programmers to contribute independently while staying closely connected with their peers and project managers.

What is the difference between Computer Programming Online vs Software Developer?

AspectComputer Programming OnlineSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires programming certifications or coursesRequires a degree in computer science or related field
Work EnvironmentRemote, online platforms, freelance or contract basisUsually office-based or remote, employed by companies
Industry UsageCommon in freelance, online courses, and self-paced learningWidely used in software companies, tech firms, and startups
Search & Comparison IntentOften searched for as online coding or programming jobsCompared for career development or job opportunities

Computer Programming Online focuses on individual coding tasks, often freelance or self-paced, while Software Developer involves creating software applications within a team or company environment. Both roles require programming skills, but the work settings and career paths differ.

Can you work from home as a computer programmer?

Computer programmers often have the option to work from home, especially if their employer supports remote work and they have the necessary skills in programming languages, collaboration tools, and version control systems. Many programming jobs are project-based and can be completed independently, making remote work common in the field.

Job description

Clio is the global leader in legal AI technology, empowering legal professionals and law firms of every size to work smarter, faster, and more securely.

We are transforming the legal experience for all by bettering the lives of legal professionals while increasing access to justice.

*Please note that if this job is still posted up, we are still hiring! We are looking to fill multiple roles so even if this job seems to be up for a while, it's because we're continuously hiring for brand new teams. We understand that in this job market, it feels like if you don't submit an application right away, then you won't be considered, but that's not the case here. We truly welcome you to apply anyways, and we commit to a human reviewing and processing your application as soon as we can.

We're looking for a Platform Engineer, Databases to join our Systems Engineering, Production team. This role is for someone passionate about building robust, scalable database systems, and eager to tackle innovative challenges.

As a key player, you'll focus on optimizing, maintaining, and evolving our MySQL infrastructure to support high-performance, mission-critical applications. This is a unique opportunity to be exposed to diverse technologies and make a measurable impact.

This role is available to candidates across Canada, excluding Quebec. If you are local to one of our hubs (Burnaby, Calgary, or Toronto) you will be expected to be in office minimum two days per week for our Anchor Days.

What Your Team Does:
  • We build, secure, and maintain the infrastructure and critical services that power Clio's core applications

  • We help Clions make data-driven decisions by providing observability and transparency for all of our environments

  • We collaborate with the Clio product development teams to build tools that improve workflows and remove manual labour or friction points

What You'll Work On:
  • You'll be responsible for preparing Clio's database infrastructure for the future in terms of scale and reliability

  • You will collaboratively define the roadmap to support business goals, and satisfy application requirements

  • You will investigate and solve performance problems with our MySQL databases and other data stores

  • You will scope, define, and collaborate with developers to implement automation and processes that power the reliability of Clio's data stores

What You Should Have:
  • Experience investigating and solving performance problems

  • The ability to optimize query performance

  • Readiness to work with and develop the MySQL knowledge to the rest of the SRE team

  • A portfolio of successful projects (as well as a collection of lessons learned from failed projects)

  • A keen interest in improving your craft using AI

Don't have all of those? The most important part of this job is that you approach new challenges with curiosity and a drive to apply what you learn to fixing root causes, not just symptoms. Deep curiosity and a desire to learn will help you succeed in this job, combined with a drive to help others by shipping code.

Serious bonus points if you have experience with:
  • Migrations tools, pt-online-schema-change or gh-ost

  • Managing hosts with Puppet

  • Docker and Kubernetes

  • Ruby or Golang

  • AWS resources with Terraform or CloudFormation

  • Bash

  • ProxySQL and the Percona toolkit

This is for a net new role.
