What is a computer programmer internship?

Computer programmer internships are temporary, entry-level positions designed to give students or recent graduates hands-on experience in software development. Interns work under the guidance of experienced programmers, assisting with coding, testing, debugging, and maintaining software applications. These internships help individuals gain practical skills, build their professional networks, and improve their chances of securing a full-time programming job after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer programmer intern, and why are they important?

To land an internship in software development, an aptitude for computer science and a track record of success in your academic program are key. However, aside from relevant knowledge, the ability to take initiative and a willingness to pitch in wherever you are needed are probably your two most important qualifications. Companies appreciate interns who can think on their feet and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision, so be sure your resume or internship application highlight projects you complete in the course of your studies as well as any leadership roles you undertake at your university or with extracurricular groups.

Job description

Who We Are

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operationsโ„ข Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing โ€” and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.

Working at Samsara means youโ€™ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team thatโ€™s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, youโ€™ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About the role

At Samsara, interns can work on a wide range of high-impact engineering challenges across our connected operations platform. Depending on the team, an intern may help build the backend infrastructure that powers our IoT platform, scaling data ingestion and storage systems that support over 15,000 hardware assets and tens of thousands of customers around the world. They may also work across the full stack, creating intuitive user experiences that turn data into actionable insights, while partnering closely with product and design to rapidly iterate on features that deliver real customer value.

On the mobile side, an intern could help strengthen the infrastructure behind our React Native app, enabling feature teams to move quickly and build performant, maintainable products. For those focused on embedded software, projects may include building and maintaining software that runs directly on Samsara hardware, spanning areas like edge AI, multimedia frameworks, power management, and real-time data processing in demanding real-world environments.

Throughout the interview process, we will dig into your past experience, what you are most interested in learning next, and where you would be the best fit across our engineering teams.

Our engineering teams use Golang for backend development, TypeScript and React for the web client, GraphQL for data access, and React Native for mobile development. Direct experience with this exact stack is not required, but experience with similar technologies is strongly encouraged.

You should apply ifโ€ฆ
  • You want to impact the industries that run our world. The software you build will help keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, and - most importantly - ensure workers return home safely.
  • You want to build for scale. You'll work on technology that powers physical operations at a scale most engineers never experience.
  • You believe customers are more than a number. Our engineers are deeply invested in our customers and the daily problems they face. They visit customers in person to understand not just how Samsara helps them today, but where our products need to go next. Youโ€™ll participate in customer interviews, collaborate with success and product teams, and use metrics to ensure your work translates into real outcomes.
  • You're curious and self-driven. You challenge yourself outside of class - hackathons, side projects, tearing apart how something works just because you want to understand it. You move fast, embrace new technology, and treat learning as constant.
  • You're drawn to hard problems and own them end to end. You dig into complexity, research it thoroughly, and find the simplest solution that works - then see it through, holding yourself to a high standard along the way.
  • You're AI-forward. You've woven AI into how you work, whether that's accelerating debugging, drafting code, or exploring unfamiliar problem spaces faster. You're quick to experiment and always looking for smarter ways to build.
  • You're a collaborator. You work well independently and across cross-functional teams, and you're motivated by winning together, not just individually.
Minimum Requirements
  • Currently a junior-year student on track to complete a Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics, or Data Science between Spring/Summer/Fall 2028 or Winter 2029.
  • This internship is hybrid: 3 days per week in our San Francisco, CA office. Relocation assistance is available.
  • This internship is a full-time, paid experience - interns are expected not to be enrolled in school full-time while working at Samsara.

We know that applying for internships can be time-consuming, and we truly appreciate your effort. Weโ€™re looking forward to learning more about you through your application.

The range of hourly base salary for this position is below. Please note that base hourly pay may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Total Rewards

At Samsara, we build for the people who keep the global economy moving. We want owners, not passengers, which is why our rewards are designed to fuel high-impact builders. Our compensation program delivers above-market total compensation through a combination of base salary, performance-based bonus/variable pay, and equity (for eligible roles) in a high-growth public company. We meaningfully differentiate pay for our top performers, who have the opportunity to earn above-market compensation that can outpace the broader market over time.

Beyond compensation, we provide the foundations that enable long-term success: a flexible, employee-led remote model, a professional development stipend, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, and more. If youโ€™re ready to build for the long term and own the outcome, your journey starts here.

Flexible Working

At Samsara, we embrace a flexible working model that caters to the diverse needs of our teams. Our offices are open for those who prefer to work in-person and we also support remote work where it aligns with our operational requirements. For certain positions, being close to one of our offices or within a specific geographic area is important to facilitate collaboration, access to resources, or alignment with our service regions. In these cases, the job description will clearly indicate any working location requirements. Our goal is to ensure that all members of our team can contribute effectively, whether they are working on-site, in a hybrid model, or fully remotely. All offers of employment are contingent upon an individualโ€™s ability to secure and maintain the legal right to work at the company and in the specified work location, if applicable.

Belonging at Samsara

At Samsara, we welcome everyone regardless of their background. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, disability, age, and other characteristics protected by law. We depend on the unique approaches of our team members to help us solve complex problems and want to ensure that Samsara is a place where people from all backgrounds can make an impact.

Accommodations

Samsara is an inclusive work environment, and we are committed to ensuring equal opportunity in employment for qualified persons with disabilities. Please email accessibleinterviewing@samsara.com or click here if you require any reasonable accommodations throughout the recruiting process.
