What is a computer programmer contract?

A Computer Programmer Contract job is a temporary or project-based role where a programmer is hired for a specific duration or task. Contractors typically develop, test, and maintain software applications based on client requirements. They may work independently or through an agency, often with flexible schedules. Unlike full-time employees, contract programmers usually do not receive benefits like health insurance or paid time off. Compensation is often higher to account for this.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer programmer contract?

To thrive as a Computer Programmer Contract, you need strong programming knowledge, problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, experience with version control systems like Git, and familiarity with development environments are essential, while certifications such as Microsoft or Oracle developer credentials are valued. Excellent time management, communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new projects or teams will set you apart in contract roles. These skills and qualities ensure that contract programmers can efficiently deliver high-quality solutions, quickly integrate into diverse work environments, and meet the expectations of multiple clients.

What types of projects do computer programmer contracts typically work on, and how is workflow managed?

Computer Programmer Contractors often work on a variety of projects, including developing new software applications, updating existing systems, debugging code, or creating automation scripts based on client requirements. Workflows are usually managed through tools like Jira or Asana, and contractors collaborate remotely or on-site with development teams, business analysts, and project managers. Deadlines and deliverables are typically set by the client, and contractors may need to juggle multiple assignments simultaneously. The dynamic nature of contract work offers exposure to different industries and technologies, providing valuable experience and potential for career advancement.

What is the hourly rate for a computer programmer?

The hourly rate for a computer programmer varies based on experience, location, and specialization, but typically ranges from $25 to $100 or more. Contract computer programmers often charge higher rates to account for project scope and skill level, with rates increasing for those with expertise in specific programming languages or technologies.

Job Description

FIS Management Services, LLC seeks Software Engineer Specialists-Payments API Platform (Real Time & Event Driven) in Jacksonville, FL to design, develop, and govern a companywide API and event platform, defining canonical models, structured data contracts, and versioning to enable interoperable, audit ready integrations. Evaluate system specifications for complex business requirements and prepare computer based solutions, and analyze problems in terms of detailed system and cloud resource capabilities to ensure scalability and resilience. Lead the architecture and operation of 247365, low-latency services with documented availability objectives and continuous operations patterns including active-active, automated failover. Establish and enforce security architecture for digital transactions using recognized frameworks, tokenization, and hardware-backed key management with validated cryptographic modules. Implement OAuth 2.0, JWT, TLS, RBAC, and secrets management. Integrate strong customer authentication where required, achieving zero high severity audit findings, SAST/DAST 90% coverage, and 100% on-schedule key rotations. Design and develop RESTful and event driven APIs using modern technologies including Java/Spring Boot, NET Core, Node.js, and Python Flask, with automated CI/CD. Set the reliability engineering program for APIs and event pipelines by defining SLIs/SLOs, implementing error-budget governance, standardizing runbooks and chaos/resiliency tests, and improving health. Implement end-to-end observability including traces, metrics, and logs with correlation and golden-signal dashboards. Engineer transaction integrity via idempotency, deduplication, replay/retry semantics, and safe-retry keys to deliver exactly-once-like outcomes. Own API spec governance for synchronous HTTP and asynchronous events-compatibility rules, deprecation policy, and contract/conformance tests. Drive performance engineering for high throughput, low latency services through partitioning, indexing, memory/GC tuning, and hot path optimizations. Lead structured data migration and interoperability with mapping guides, reconciliation controls, and cutover/rollback plans. Produce and maintain technical documentation-API specs, integration guides, reference adapters/SDKs, and test harnesses. Collaborate with product, engineering, compliance, and operations to translate requirements into measurable outcomes Chair design/risk reviews for ADRs, threat models, data classification, segregation of duties to align with risk, audit, and compliance. Verify program logic by preparing representative test data and executing trial runs in lower/UAT environments. Plan and oversee program level deliverables-dependencies, technical risks, cross-team cutovers.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field and ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in the job offered or a related occupation: evaluating systems specifications for complex business requirements and developing and preparing computer based solutions; analyzing problems in terms of detailed equipment requirements and capabilities, including those related to scalable applications and cloud based resources; troubleshooting complex technical issues; architecting, designing, and developing RESTful and/or event driven APIs using modern technologies including Java/Spring Boot; implementing industry standard security in API design including OAuth 2.0, JWT, TLS encryption, role based access controls, and secrets management; In the alternative, the employer will accept a Master's degree in the above listed fields and eight (8) years of experience in the above listed skills. Telecommuting and/or working from home may be permissible pursuant to company policies.
