What is a computer night?

Computer Night jobs typically refer to positions that involve working with computers during overnight or late-night shifts. These roles may include monitoring computer systems, performing maintenance tasks, running batch processes, or providing IT support outside regular business hours. The primary goal is to ensure that computer operations run smoothly and securely during times when regular staff are not present. Such positions are common in industries that require 24/7 IT support, like data centers, healthcare, or financial services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer night?

To thrive as a Computer Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, troubleshooting, and network design, typically supported by a degree in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with tools such as Cisco routers and switches, network monitoring software, and certifications like CCNA or CompTIA Network+ is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help professionals excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating with teams. These skills ensure secure, reliable, and efficient network operations critical to organizational success.

What are the common challenges faced by computer night operators and how can they be addressed?

Computer Night Operators often manage critical IT systems during off-hours, where immediate support may be limited. One common challenge is troubleshooting urgent technical issues independently, as fewer colleagues are available for assistance. To address this, it's important to develop strong problem-solving skills, maintain detailed documentation, and familiarize oneself with escalation procedures. Regular communication with day-shift teams also ensures continuity and helps resolve recurring issues efficiently.

At GFL Environmental, green is more than just our color-it's our commitment to sustainability and innovation. As a Night Shift Maintenance Technician, you won't just be turning wrenches; you'll keep our fleet safe, reliable, and road-ready. We offer a supportive shop environment, steady year-round work, clear pathways to advance your career as a diesel mechanic, and a top-tier rewards package.
What We Offer (Benefits & Perks)
  • Tool & Boot Allowance: Tool allowance + dedicated safety boot reimbursement program.
  • Competitive Compensation: Hourly pay + overtime
  • Comprehensive Healthcare: Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage starting after 60 days.
  • Financial Security: 401(k) retirement savings plan with company match.
  • Paid Time Off: Generous PTO package plus paid holidays.
  • Paid Training & Career Development: Paid ASE certification prep/reimbursement, hands-on CNG training, and CDL acquisition assistance.
  • Supplied Gear: Company-provided work uniforms and laundry service.

About the Role
Under the guidance of shop leadership and senior mechanics, you will assist in performing preventative maintenance (PM) and foundational repairs on our fleet of Diesel and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career technician looking to sharpen their skills with modern diagnostic tools, hydraulic systems, and advanced fleet technology.
Key Responsibilities
  • Preventative Maintenance: Conduct routine PMs, including oil changes, tire service, brake adjustments, and fluid checks on heavy-duty equipment.
  • Diagnostics & Inspections: Assist senior technicians with DOT, OSHA, and safety inspections on engines, emissions, steering, and braking systems.
  • System Service: Gain hands-on exposure to hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems under guided supervision.
  • Fleet Safety: Perform test drives (if licensed) to verify repairs, diagnose minor malfunctions, and ensure vehicles meet strict safety standards.
  • Shop Operations: Complete work orders, track parts inventory electronically, and maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work environment.
  • Continuous Learning: Actively participate in paid company training programs to expand your mechanical and diagnostic skill set.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Experience: 1+ years of entry-level diesel, automotive, or heavy-equipment repair experience (vocational/technical schooling counts!).
  • Tech-Savvy: Basic computer literacy and a strong willingness to learn advanced diagnostic software.
  • Safety First: Working knowledge of basic safety standards (DOT, OSHA, and personal protective equipment).
  • Driver's License: Valid driver's license required. Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred, or willingness to obtain one within six (6) months (assistance provided).
  • Certifications: ASE certifications are a major plus (we will help you earn them!).
  • Growth Mindset: Strong work ethic, reliable attendance for night shift, and a drive to build a long-term mechanical career.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Physical Effort: Ability to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb ladders throughout the shift.
  • Lifting Ability: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and push/pull up to 100 lbs as needed.
  • Vision & Focus: Close, distance, color, and depth-perception vision required to inspect complex components and operate equipment safely.
