What does a computer network engineer do?

A computer network engineer designs, implements, and maintains computer networks such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets. They configure network hardware, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and ensure network security using tools like firewalls and VPNs, often holding certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+.

Will AI replace CCNA jobs?

Computer Networking Engineers with CCNA certification perform tasks such as configuring and troubleshooting network devices, which require technical expertise and problem-solving skills. While AI can assist with automation and routine tasks, it is unlikely to fully replace networking professionals, as complex network design and security management still demand human oversight and specialized knowledge.

What is the difference between Computer Networking Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectComputer Networking EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and testing network solutionsManaging and maintaining existing network infrastructure

Powered by our highly skilled workforce, we provide expert consultation on network and weapons systems acquisition programs, maintenance and modernization efforts, and sustainment programs with solutions in Digital Transformation, Advanced Engineering, Physical Sciences Research, Platform Lifecycle Support, and Technical Services. Since our establishment, we have demonstrated the ability to manage complex technical challenges while delivering exceptional service and mission-focused solutions to our customers.

Precise Systems is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Test & Evaluation Engineer to support Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (CUAS) operational software lab test and evaluation activities for Expeditionary Electromagnetic Warfare programs at NSWC Crane. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting software test and evaluation in laboratory, hardware-in-the-loop, and operationally relevant test environments. This position will support the planning, execution, analysis, documentation, and reporting of CUAS software tests, including unit testing, software integration testing, system-level testing, regression testing, verification and validation, and lab-based operational assessments.

This role requires a test-focused engineer who can work across software, systems engineering, RF, cybersecurity, configuration management, and field test teams to ensure CUAS software capabilities are properly tested, documented, and ready to support operational requirements. This role requires in-person support. Duties: * Support operational software lab test and evaluation activities for CUAS and EW systems.

* Plan, coordinate, execute, and document software test events in lab, hardware-in-the-loop, and operationally relevant environments. * Support software unit testing, software integration testing, system-level testing, regression testing, verification and validation, and acceptance testing. * Develop and review test objectives, test procedures, test cases, test scripts, data collection plans, test reports, and software assessment products.

* Verify that software test results comply with approved test requirements, acceptance criteria, operational needs, and customer-defined performance expectations. * Perform traceability analysis between requirements, test cases, test procedures, test execution results, and documented findings. * Support evaluation of Government Furnished Code, Government Furnished Information, contractor-developed software, and private software products used in CUAS test environments.

* Assist with software-based test and evaluation, quality assurance, requirements documentation, lab testing, demonstrations, and improvements to field test software. * Support configuration, operation, and maintenance of operational software lab environments used to evaluate CUAS capabilities. * Assist with standing up and maintaining representative lab environments, including software builds, test tools, data collection systems, interfaces, networked test assets, and hardware-in-the-loop configurations.

* Support hardware-in-the-loop testing to evaluate software performance, system response, RF characteristics, output timing, mission behavior, and CUAS effectiveness. * Identify software anomalies, data gaps, regression issues, integration problems, test limitations, and operational impacts. * Document software deficiencies, test observations, corrective actions, retest results, and engineering recommendations.

* Coordinate with software developers, systems engineers, RF engineers, cybersecurity personnel, test directors, configuration managers, and Government leads to resolve issues and support test readiness. * Support test automation efforts to improve test consistency, repeatability, rigor, and efficiency. * Participate in test readiness reviews, technical interchange meetings, Integrated Product Teams, daily test briefs, post-test debriefs, and lessons learned reviews.

* Support the development, review, revision, verification, and release of T&E documentation, including test plans, SOPs, schedules, briefs, reports, and technical summaries. * Ensure software lab test artifacts, test data, and technical documentation are properly marked, controlled, stored, and retained in accordance with applicable security, CUI, OPSEC, and configuration management requirements. Required Education: * Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Test Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Required Experience: * Three (3) years of professional experience in RF, microwave, or electronic systems engineering. * Relevant software test, military, technical, or laboratory test experience may be considered in lieu of degree depending on customer requirements. * Experience supporting software test and evaluation, software integration testing, system-level testing, regression testing, or verification and validation.

* Experience developing or executing test procedures, test cases, test scripts, test reports, or software assessment documentation. * Understanding of software test processes, requirements traceability, defect tracking, configuration control, and test data analysis. * Ability to support lab-based software testing and coordinate across software, systems, test, and cybersecurity teams.

* Ability to document technical findings, risks, issues, assumptions, and recommendations. * Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Desired Qualifications * Active Secret clearance; Top Secret/SCI eligibility preferred.

* Experience supporting CUAS, electronic warfare, RF systems, tactical systems, mission systems, software-defined capabilities, or test infrastructure. * Experience supporting NSWC Crane, NAVSEA, Marine Corps, Army, Navy, or other DoD test programs. * Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, operational software labs, integration labs, modeling and simulation environments, or field test software.

* Experience with Jira, Git, Confluence, SharePoint, MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, Linux, Windows, or automated test tools. * Familiarity with software build control, version tracking, configuration management, release testing, and regression test planning. * Experience supporting test automation, software quality assurance, user acceptance testing, or independent verification and validation.

* Familiarity with RF test environments, CUAS threat systems, UAS communications, EW techniques, or mission/threat load evaluation. * Experience developing or reviewing test plans, SOPs, schedules, briefs, test reports, technical reports, engineering judgment records, and lessons learned products.
