The roles often overlap, but the engineer's role is more project-based and technical, while the administrator handles ongoing operations.

Are computer networking engineers still in demand?

Yes, computer networking engineers are in demand due to the ongoing need for secure and reliable network infrastructure in organizations. They are essential for designing, implementing, and maintaining networks, with skills in network protocols, security, and certifications like CCNA often required. The role is expected to grow as technology advances and organizations expand their digital operations.

What does a computer networking engineer do?

A computer networking engineer designs, implements, and maintains computer networks such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets. Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to play a critical role in designing, leading, and sustaining a secure, high-performing network infrastructure that supports our business operations and growth. Hodgson Russ LLP, a regional, US-based law firm with a vibrant Toronto office, is seeking a Network Engineer Manger.  The position will be based in our Toronto office with collaboration (including regular travel) to our headquarters in Buffalo, New York. In this role, you will be responsible for the planning, design, and ongoing operation of the firm’s network infrastructure, translating business and technology requirements into scalable, secure, and reliable network solutions. Essential responsibilities include:

  • Manage day-to-day network engineering operations, including standards, enhancements, patches, and operating procedures, to optimize availability, performance, security, and functionality.
  • Oversee the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management of network systems, subsystems, and related resources supporting the firm’s internal environment, including communications equipment and end-user connectivity.
  • Serve as the network Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical leadership and direction for incident and problem management, change execution, and strategic initiatives.
  • Supervise assigned staff by setting priorities, coaching performance, ensuring documentation and compliance, and enforcing security and operational best practices.

This is a hands-on leadership role suited for a professional who thrives on challenges, excels in organization, time and resource management, and is an effective communicator. A bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, software engineering, or electrical engineering is required, along with at least six years of full-time experience in network administration or network engineering with progressively more senior and complex responsibilities.
