Computer Networking Engineer information

What is the difference between Computer Networking Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectComputer Networking EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and testing network solutionsManaging and maintaining existing network infrastructure
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping network architecture, troubleshooting complex issuesMonitoring network performance, configuring devices, user support

While both roles involve working with networks, Computer Networking Engineers focus on designing and building network systems, whereas Network Administrators manage and maintain those networks on a daily basis. The roles often overlap, but the engineer's role is more project-based and technical, while the administrator handles ongoing operations.

Are computer networking engineers still in demand?

Yes, computer networking engineers are in demand due to the ongoing need for secure and reliable network infrastructure in organizations. They are essential for designing, implementing, and maintaining networks, with skills in network protocols, security, and certifications like CCNA often required. The role is expected to grow as technology advances and organizations expand their digital operations.

What does a computer networking engineer do?

A computer networking engineer designs, implements, and maintains computer networks such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets. They troubleshoot network issues, configure hardware and software, and ensure network security using tools like routers, switches, and firewalls. Certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are often helpful in this role.

The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with a minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in large-scale, mission-critical networks. This role requires a solid background in data center technologies, firewalls, load balancers, and wireless technologies. You will support our current infrastructure and will participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to ensure the stability of our critical applications.

Reports to: Senior Manager, Network Engineering

Job Location: Hybrid (2-3 days in office) - based in Vancouver, BC.

Key Accountabilities

  • Network Operations: Act as part of a team of network engineers in the day-to-day operations and 24/7 support of our global enterprise network, ensuring service level agreements (SLAs) and uptime targets are met.

  • Infrastructure Support: Provide support for Datacenter, Campus, SAN, and Wireless infrastructure.

  • Technical Escalation: Serve as the top-tier technical escalation point for troubleshooting and resolving complex, high-priority network incidents.

  • Optimization: Engineer, implement, and optimize routing protocols (BGP) and switching environments to improve network efficiency and reduce latency.

  • Automation: Develop and maintain network automation scripts using Python, Ansible, or similar tools to standardize configurations and automate repetitive operational tasks.

  • Security Management: Manage and maintain network security infrastructure, including firewalls (Cisco ASA, Fortinet, AWS Native FW), VPNs, and NAC solutions (Cisco ISE).

  • Performance & Capacity: Oversee the performance and capacity of the network, utilizing monitoring tools like SolarWinds, Splunk, and Wireshark to proactively identify and address potential issues.

  • Project Leadership: Lead network-related projects, from planning and design to implementation and post-deployment support.

  • Mentorship: Mentor and train junior engineers on advanced troubleshooting techniques, network protocols, and operational best practices.

  • Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including network diagrams, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and knowledge base articles.

  • On-Call Support: Participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support for critical workloads.

Must-Haves

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Experience: 7+ years of experience in a network engineering role, with a focus on operations.

  • Datacenter Tech: Hands-on experience with Cisco ACI datacenter technology.

  • Network Protocols: Expert-level knowledge of routing and switching protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, Spanning Tree).

  • Specialized Networking: Experience with Multicast networking (PIM-SM, IGMP, MSDP) and Cisco wireless technologies.

  • Hardware Expertise: Extensive hands-on experience with Cisco enterprise-grade hardware (Nexus, Catalyst) and NX-OS/IOS.

  • Security & Load Balancing: Proven experience with firewall administration and policy management, as well as F5 LTM/APM and Single Sign-On (SSO) integrations.

  • Storage Networking: Experience with SAN technology (Cisco or Brocade).

  • Certifications: Cisco CCNP Datacenter or CCNP Enterprise certification.

  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication and documentation skills, with proficiency in tools like Visio or Lucidchart.

  • Cloud Expertise: Cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate).

  • Scripting: Any scripting experience (Python, Ansible, or Terraform).
