Job description

POSITION: Network Administrator

DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services (ITS)

REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President, ITS

WORK SCHEDULE: Hybrid work schedule (3 days in office required; 2 days remote)

PRIMARY FUNCTION: To plan, implement and manage the University's local and remote network services to meet the needs of students, staff, and faculty as well as the Mission of Point Park University.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree (preferred) or equivalent experience in information science, computer science, or related plus 3 years (5 years, preferred) professional experience in network administration
  • Experience managing enterprise network systems (switches, routers, wireless controllers, and firewalls)
  • Understanding of L2 concepts including: VLANs, spanning tree, trunking, and 802.1x
  • Basic knowledge of L3 concepts including: TCP/IP, IP addressing, static routing, dynamic routing protocols like EIGRP and BGP
  • Experience with enterprise firewalls and VPNs
  • Ability to develop and write technical documentation
  • Ability to script administrative tasks using Powershell, Python, or other similar languages

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work on campus to maintain the 24 x 7 operational readiness of the University's campus network environment. Monitor network analytics to examine the stability and security of the network. Participate in an on-call rotation and be able to come to campus off-hours to repair failed equipment. (20%)
  2. Plan and implement design changes to the network including reorganization of equipment within buildings, replacement of major network systems, or major configuration changes.(20%)
  3. Schedule and perform ongoing routine maintenance of the network such as firmware upgrades, minor configuration changes, and replacement of access-layer network devices. (20%)
  4. Provide network support to other IT staff for installs, upgrades, and ongoing maintenance of server and endpoint systems. (15%)
  5. Assist IT Helpdesk with network troubleshooting, configuration changes, and endpoint connectivity escalations. (10%)
  6. Manage network projects including oversight of network consultants and vendors. (10%)
  7. Perform other related duties as assigned. (5%)
