Job Title: Systems Engineer
Location: Hybrid Role (Typically 1-3 days in office weekly)

Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and versatile Systems Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in classical engineering disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, or Hardware Engineering) and demonstrate a deep understanding of engineering rigor and process. In addition, the candidate should have significant experience with system design of software-based products, including user experience (UX) design, and knowledge of software design practices. Knowledge of real-time communication system design, secure IP networking, and Modular Open Systems Architecture (MOSA) is highly desirable.

What a Systems Engineer Does at REDCOM Laboratories:
  • Gather and analyze requirements from internal and external stakeholders, including standards documents, to create actionable engineering specifications.
  • Collaboratively design and document system architectures to meet requirements, integrating hardware, software, system interface, and user interface components.
  • Provide technical leadership and facilitate collaboration across multidisciplinary teams for design, prototyping, validation, and commercialization of product systems.
  • Apply engineering best practices and ensure compliance with quality and regulatory standards.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving system-level issues throughout product development and deployment life cycle.
  • Prepare clear technical documentation and communicate project status to diverse audiences.
  • Drive continuous improvement to products and engineering process by staying current with industry trends and implementing best practices.
  • Evaluate and assess multiple design approaches, researching available technologies and products as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and participate in the full systems engineering lifecycle, from requirements analysis and design through integration, verification, and validation.
  • Apply classical engineering principles and rigorous processes to ensure robust, reliable, and maintainable system designs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware, software, and UX/UI designers, to develop integrated solutions.
  • Act as technical point of contact and subject matter expert for customer interactions regarding system requirements and design.
  • Architect and design systems with a focus on interoperability, security, reliability, and compliance with industry standards where applicable.
  • Develop and review technical documentation, including system specifications, interface control documents, and test plans.
  • Support the development and integration of real-time communications systems, ensuring low latency and high reliability.
  • Evaluate and implement security best practices, including zero trust architectures and commercial cryptography, to protect sensitive communications.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to REDCOM’s mission.
  • Act as a representative of REDCOM for participation in technical consortia and standards bodies.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in systems engineering with a strong understanding of engineering rigor and process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software and UX design principles.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and integrating hardware and software components.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated ability to discuss technical topics in plain language with both technical and non-technical personnel.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Modular Open Systems Architecture standards such as the Sensor Open Systems Architecture™ (SOSA®) or similar open standards.
  • Active Secret Clearance, verifiable through the Defense Information Systems for Security (DISS) or the ability to obtain secret clearance through REDCOM sponsorship.
  • Knowledge of zero trust security models and commercial cryptography.
  • Hands-on experience with real-time communications system design and implementation.
  • Familiarity with secure communications protocols and standards.
  • Experience in defense, public safety, or other mission-critical environments.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Hybrid work environment (work-at-home and in-office)
  • This position may require occasional extended work hours to meet project/customer goals and minimal travel (under 15%)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The employee must be able to work on a computer workstation for extended periods of time requiring the ability to hear, have visual acuity, and have manual dexterity. This position is an office-based position with lifting requirements minimal to the role.
ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT:
  • No direct reports however this position will have broad authority to collaborate with people working on project deadlines and deliverables.

Systems Engineer Hiring Range: $125,000 - $155,000 annually
