Job description

CLASSIFICATION: non-exempt
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs a variety of functions and tasks associated with Public Services under the professional guidance and supervision of the Public Services Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
  • Register library cards, check in and out materials, update patron accounts
  • Process interlibrary loans for patron pick up
  • Help patrons with questions for computer lab and library services
  • Help patrons with print station, photocopier, fax machine, and other equipment
  • Help patrons with searching and finding materials
  • Help patrons with using Wi-Fi and e-resources
  • Answer basic informational and directional questions
  • Assist with creating and promoting library events and services
  • Shelve materials
  • Shelf-read and clean various library collections
  • Deliver outreach materials
  • Assist with selecting items for outreach patrons
  • May assist with readers' advisory and collection development
  • May assist other departments as needed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Excellent customer service skills, with experience preferred
  • Ability to take initiative and manage time wisely
  • Self-motivated and able to use good judgment
  • Pleasant and effective professional communication
  • Orderly, have an attention to detail, tactful, and able to adapt to changes
  • Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical organization
  • Proficiency with keyboarding, word processing, online communication, and web and database searching
  • Prompt attendance and punctuality is essential

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High school diploma required. An associate degree is preferred.
  2. Proficiency with computers required
  3. Evening and weekend work required
  4. Kansas driver's license
  5. Ability to perform the essential physical and mental requirements of the position

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:
Lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs.
Pushing up to 60 lbs. of books on carts
Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching
Talking and hearing
Handling, processing, picking up, and shelving of materials
EQUIPMENT USED:
Computers, telephone, fax machine, photocopier, audio/video devices, scanner, printers, self-check-in machine, self-checkout machines, and pickup lockers
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position operates mainly indoors and in direct customer service situations. There will be some travel required and some work outdoors at programs and events. This is a fully onsite position.
