Job description

Applied Technical Services, LLC, is a leading provider of critical testing, inspection, certification, and compliance services. The company serves clients across a diverse set of large and stable end markets including manufacturing, power generation, aerospace, medical, and defense. ATS was founded in 1967 and is headquartered in Marietta, GA. Today the Company employs nearly 2,100 team members in over 95 locations across the United States.
The Materials Testing Technician will support engineers in conducting analysis and sample preparation for materials testing in our Chesapeake, VA lab and occasionally at customer sites. This role is also responsible for machining material samples using a variety of equipment. These materials tests are used to determine the properties of advanced materials used in high tech applications such as aerospace, defense, medical devices, power generation, fire arms, forensic investigations, etc.
Responsibilities:
  • Learn and follow materials testing and setup procedures, techniques and specifications. This includes tensile, bend, impact, and hardness testing on metals, load and pressure testing, and other methods.
  • Operate equipment independently and perform routine equipment and shop maintenance
  • Gather data required for tests, properly identify and calibrated tools/equipment, and interpret data on tests with a moderate level of complexity
  • Learn and become proficient at various build and fabrication techniques such as measuring, cutting, drilling, welding etc
  • Machine material samples using manual mills/lathes/saws and other equipment
  • Build and fabricate custom test rigs and fixtures as need
  • Learn and adhere to safety procedures
  • Review job requirements and set up required test equipment
  • Prepare work orders in accordance with QAP for testing to be performed
  • Perform test programs and procedures to written instructions
  • Interpret and evaluate results to applicable methods, codes and specifications
  • Complete reports and documentation; use tools and technology to track work
  • Procure supplies for lab with appropriate approvals; update inventories as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience and Skills:
  • High School or GED; Associate's degree a plus
  • 5 + years of related experience including experience with very strong mechanical aptitude; must be familiar with basic hand tools and power tools
  • Demonstrated ability and minimum 5 years' experience with manual machining equipment, this includes Bridgeport Mill, Bandsaw, Lathe.
  • Experience in a material testing laboratory environment preferred but not required
  • Basic technical acumen with the ability to follow lab processes, test specifications, and perform tests with moderate complexity
  • Able to operate various types of lab equipment and tools with supervision; ability and willingness to be hands on with tools, machinery and equipment used in setting up tests and fabricating test rigs and fixtures
  • Familiarity with welding and fabrication techniques
  • Problem-solving skills with the ability to follow direction and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to operate across other internal departments or functions
  • Strong Computer literacy and able to write test reports, create spreadsheets and communicate through email with customers.
  • Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), maintain Lab ISO and process Safety procedure

  • Ability and willingness to work overtime (generally 10-15% sometimes more) and a varying schedule as required
  • Ability and willingness to travel to job sites (construction, power generation and manufacturing sites) less than 10% on average
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record
