REPORTS TO: Chairperson, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering
SUPERVISES: Teaching Assistants (TAs) and student helpers assigned to courses with a software/hardware laboratory component.
SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Provides technical support predominantly for Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department activities including supporting undergraduate ECE programs and assisting with research projects, with instructional laboratory preparation/training and lecturing, and with development, operation and maintenance of laboratory facilities, apparatus and equipment. Ensures an organized environment of laboratory and stores in support of undergraduate programs. Provides operatonal safety and hazard avoidance direction in consultation with university safety leadership. Supports instruction and delivery of required undergraduate UMassD courses that serve students in Electrical & Computer Engineering. Performs other duties as assigned by the department chairperson and the engineering dean. Provides laboratory support for enterprise and student design projects. Follows the University's best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Fosters a creative, collegial, effective learning community and is receptive to new responsibilities with changes in the department's laboratory research and instruction activities.
  • Oversees pre-lab set-up of equipment, supplies and assessment of rooms. Trains TAs on set up and operation of laboratory equipment and assists faculty/TAs on equipment set up and operation.
  • Manages all aspects of the department stockroom and laboratories with careful attention to orderliness, and professionalism.
  • Serves as an expert resource to students and faculty in projects and research that may require some fabrication. These services will be made available to other students and faculty in the College of Engineering as time and expertise permit.
  • Coordinates the departmental safety program, including maintaining compliance with federal, state, local and University safety codes and hazardous material handling (and disposal) procedures in coordination with appropriate staff of the University Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Reinforces safe and appropriate use of equipment by faculty and students.
  • Plans inventory and orders components to meet department requirements and maintains parts and device inventory control in an orderly and professional manner as needed on current basis and future needs to meet department curriculum and program demands.
  • Handles shipping and receiving for the department which may be received directly or processed through the shipping and receiving department.
  • Oversees facility operations, project proposing/execution/reporting, lab utilization, and/or technical needs to support ECE instruction and research activities.
  • Manages, coordinates, installs, maintains, repairs and calibrates equipment and instrumentation in ECE labs. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and performs basic repairs. Procures cost estimates and coordinates with external sources for major repairs.
  • Assists department Chairperson with laboratory development planning, operational improvements and renovations.
  • Coordinates and maintains lab security and access.
  • Remains current with ECE laboratory practices and technology developments to enhance research and educational outcomes.
  • Assists with department recruitment and outreach activities and provides customized laboratory tours for external constituents of the ECE program and College of Engineering as assigned by the Chairperson.
  • Supervises the organization, maintenance and inventory of equipment, parts and supplies, and oversees security of equipment and facilities such as the laboratories and stockroom.
  • Oversees the moving of equipment from room to room or laboratory on an as needed basis.
  • Serves as the point of contact with property control for departmental assets.
  • Other duties as assigned by the department chair.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field.
  • EXPERIENCE: Related experience in the field of electrical or electronic technology.
  • OTHER:
    • Computer literate. Some mechanical fabrication and assembly.
    • Available during evening and weekend hours as teaching/project schedules dictate.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Master of Science degree with appropriate experience is preferred.
  • Experience working in a prototype environment.
  • Experience working in a higher education electrical and computer engineering laboratory setting with a strong customer service focus.
  • Experience working with technicians, engineers and representatives of equipment vendors and manufacturers to obtain equipment, supplies, and support.
  • Experience demonstrating procedures to or instructing students is an asset.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to establish a cooperative working environment with faculty and students.
