What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in computer architecture, hardware and software design, and at least a bachelor's degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages (such as C/C++ or Python), hardware description languages (like VHDL or Verilog), and tools like MATLAB or CAD software is common, and certifications like Cisco or CompTIA can be beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting technical issues. These skills and qualifications are essential for designing innovative computing solutions, ensuring reliable system performance, and succeeding in multidisciplinary engineering environments.

What is computer engineering?

Computer engineering is a field that combines principles of electrical engineering and computer science to design, develop, and maintain computer systems and hardware. Computer engineers work on both the hardware (such as processors, circuit boards, and memory devices) and the software that runs on these systems. Their work enables the creation of everything from smartphones and laptops to complex embedded systems in cars and medical devices. Computer engineering can also involve research, innovation, and improving the efficiency and performance of computers and related technologies.

What is the difference between Computer Engineering vs Computer Science?

Job description

Tier 3 Professional Services Engineer

First Call Computer Solutions

Build complex IT environments. Deliver successful projects. Make an impact.

First Call Computer Solutions is looking for an experienced Tier 3 Professional Services Engineer to join our Professional Services team. This role is designed for senior engineers who thrive on implementing complex infrastructure projects, leading technical delivery, and turning approved designs into stable, secure, production-ready environments.

You'll work closely with Project Managers, fellow engineers, and clients to deliver predictable, high-quality outcomes through disciplined project execution, effective communication, and adherence to First Call's implementation standards. Success in this role requires both advanced technical expertise and a commitment to consistent project delivery that builds long-term client confidence.

If you enjoy solving challenging technical problems and seeing projects through from kickoff to successful completion, we'd like to talk.

What You'll Do

As a Tier 3 Professional Services Engineer, you'll lead the implementation of our most technically demanding customer projects, including:

  • Multi-site network deployments
  • Advanced server migrations and virtualization
  • Hybrid cloud and Microsoft Azure implementations
  • Microsoft 365 migrations and advanced administration
  • Firewall, VPN, and security deployments
  • Backup and disaster recovery solutions
  • Large, multi-vendor infrastructure projects

You'll also:

  • Execute project plans developed by our Sales Engineers and Project Managers
  • Coordinate implementation activities with clients, vendors, and internal teams
  • Plan and execute implementation tasks to meet project scope, schedule, and budget objectives
  • Identify, communicate, and mitigate technical and project risks throughout the implementation lifecycle
  • Manage implementation changes while maintaining project quality and client expectations
  • Execute projects using standardized implementation methodologies, documentation, and delivery processes
  • Validate solutions before production deployment
  • Produce thorough implementation documentation and complete seamless handoffs to our Managed Services team
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of project standards, implementation checklists, and operational processes
  • Leverage automation, scripting, AI tools, and standardized processes to improve consistency, efficiency, and delivery quality
What We're Looking For

We're looking for engineers who combine deep technical expertise with disciplined project execution. The ideal candidate understands that exceptional client outcomes require more than technical skill—they require planning, communication, accountability, and consistent execution throughout every phase of a project.

Required Experience
  • 7+ years implementing business IT infrastructure
  • MSP or IT consulting experience strongly preferred
  • Proven experience delivering customer-facing infrastructure projects from planning through production
  • Strong troubleshooting, planning, organizational, and time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining exceptional quality and client satisfaction
Technical Experience

Ideal candidates have experience with many of the following technologies:

  • Microsoft 365
  • Windows Server
  • Microsoft Azure and hybrid cloud
  • Hyper-V, VMWare, or other virtualization platforms
  • Active Directory and Entra
  • SonicWall firewalls
  • Enterprise switching, routing, wireless networking, VLANs, and VPNs
  • Backup and disaster recovery platforms
  • Cybersecurity technologies
  • Enterprise networking and infrastructure

Relevant Microsoft, Cisco, Sonicwall, Azure, or security certifications are a plus.

Project Delivery & Professional Services Experience

Success in this role depends on more than technical ability. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in delivering projects within a structured Professional Services environment.

We're looking for experience with:

  • Managing multiple implementation projects simultaneously
  • Planning, organizing, and executing project work to meet scope, schedule, and budget objectives
  • Coordinating clients, vendors, and internal teams throughout project delivery
  • Managing technical risk, project dependencies, and implementation change
  • Following standardized project management and implementation processes
  • Producing thorough documentation that enables successful operational handoff
  • Delivering predictable, high-quality project outcomes with minimal rework
  • Building trusted client relationships through professional communication and consistent execution
Professional Services Automation (PSA)

Experience with ConnectWise PSA is strongly preferred. Candidates should be comfortable using ConnectWise PSA—or a comparable Professional Services Automation (PSA) platform such as Autotask or HaloPSA—to:

  • Manage project tickets, tasks, and milestones
  • Track billable time accurately
  • Document implementation progress and technical work
  • Communicate project status with internal teams and clients
  • Manage project schedules and resource assignments
  • Maintain visibility into project progress, delivery performance, and profitability
Success in This Role

Successful Tier 3 Professional Services Engineers at First Call:

  • Deliver projects on time, within scope, and within budget
  • Build stable, secure, and supportable client environments
  • Communicate proactively with clients, project managers, vendors, and teammates
  • Anticipate and manage technical and project risks before they impact delivery
  • Execute projects using standardized implementation, documentation, and change management practices
  • Produce clean operational handoffs that position Managed Services for long-term success
  • Maintain high billable utilization while delivering exceptional customer experiences
  • Continuously improve delivery through automation, AI-assisted workflows, standardized processes, and lessons learned
  • Build lasting client confidence through consistent, professional project execution

  • Travel: 50%+ local travel with occasional out-of-area travel
  • After-hours work: Required for project cutovers and implementation activities
