Job description

DataPath is a leader in satellite and terrestrial telecommunication system design, integration, and turnkey installation services, headquartered in Duluth, GA (Northeast suburb of Atlanta, GA). DataPath specializes in designing, manufacturing, and supporting both custom and commercial- off-the-shelf mission-critical remote satellite-based communications solutions for customers worldwide in the most extreme conditions.
Summary / Objective
The Electrical / Systems Integration Engineering Intern supports engineering design and documentation activities related to system interconnects, cable assemblies, connector selection, power distribution, and controlled technical documentation. This position is intended for a student with an electrical engineering, computer engineering, systems engineering, or closely related technical background who is interested in hands-on hardware integration, drawing development, and practical engineering documentation in a controlled configuration management environment.
The intern will assist with updating and creating systems interconnect diagrams, cable drawings, wiring documentation, power budgets, breaker and fuse selection support, and related engineering records. The role requires attention to detail, willingness to work within established engineering and configuration control processes, and the ability to learn how electrical design information is translated into released technical documentation.
Job Responsibilities
  • Update, create, and maintain system interconnect diagrams, cable drawings, wiring diagrams, and related electrical documentation.
  • Assist engineers with cable assembly definition, connector selection, pinout documentation, and interface details.
  • Support development and maintenance of electrical power budgets, including load identification, voltage/current requirements, power margin, and heat-load considerations.
  • Assist with breaker, fuse, wire gauge, connector, and terminal selection under the guidance of engineering staff.
  • Review existing drawings, schematics, cable documentation, and system-level diagrams for accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
  • Support documentation of electrical interfaces between system components, including power, signal, control, Ethernet, serial, discrete I/O, and other common interface types.
  • Search PDM, PLM, ERP, and engineering records to locate existing parts, cables, connectors, breakers, and approved alternates.
  • Assist with entering or maintaining parts, cable assemblies, and bill of material information in ERP, PDM, or PLM systems.
  • Support configuration management activities related to drawing revisions, engineering changes, released documentation, and controlled technical data.
  • Work with mechanical, electrical, systems, manufacturing, and configuration management personnel to ensure documentation supports design, fabrication, assembly, test, and sustainment needs.
  • Participate in design reviews, drawing reviews, and technical discussions as needed.
  • Maintain flexibility as project methods, documentation standards, and customer requirements evolve.

  • Completed at least one full year of college and currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a closely related technical field.
  • Rising sophomore or higher standing.
  • Must be available for full-time work, 40 hours per week, during assigned rotations. This position is not conducive to taking courses simultaneously during working rotations.
  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits, voltage, current, power, grounding, and wiring concepts.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic schematics, wiring diagrams, cable drawings, or system block diagrams.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel or similar tools for developing tables, calculations, power budgets, and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow controlled engineering processes.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and professionally.
  • Willingness to learn engineering documentation practices, configuration management, and release processes.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while seeking clarification when requirements are incomplete or ambiguous.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with student design projects, robotics, Formula SAE, aerospace clubs, lab projects, capstone projects, or other hands-on electrical/system integration activities involving wiring, harnesses, power distribution, controls, or hardware troubleshooting.
  • Exposure to cable assembly design, connector pinouts, terminal blocks, wire routing, labeling, or harness documentation.
  • Familiarity with connector families, backshells, contacts, crimping, shielding, grounding, or strain relief concepts.
  • Familiarity with breaker, fuse, relay, power supply, terminal block, and wire gauge selection.
  • Experience creating or updating electrical drawings using tools such as AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, Visio, DraftSight, Zuken, EPLAN, or similar documentation tools.
  • Experience with 3D CAD or mechanical packaging tools is a plus, especially where cable routing, connector access, or equipment layout is involved.
  • Exposure to ERP, PDM, or PLM systems for part searches, drawing control, BOM creation, or configuration management.
  • Familiarity with military, aerospace, industrial, or other controlled documentation environments is a plus.
  • Understanding of manufacturing, assembly, test, or troubleshooting processes related to electrical hardware is a plus.
  • Interest in working at the intersection of electrical design, mechanical packaging, system integration, and technical documentation.
