What is a computer engineering internship?

A Computer Engineering Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of computer engineering. Interns typically work alongside experienced engineers on projects involving hardware, software, or systems integration. These internships provide practical exposure to real-world engineering challenges, enhance technical skills, and help interns build a professional network. They are often a stepping stone to full-time employment in the technology industry.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a computer engineering internship?

During a Computer Engineering Internship, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects such as developing embedded systems, assisting with hardware testing, or writing and debugging code for software applications. Interns often collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers and software developers, to contribute to real-world product development. These projects are designed to provide practical experience, enhance your technical skills, and help you understand the workflow within a professional engineering environment. You may also have opportunities to present your work and receive feedback from experienced mentors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineering Intern, you need a solid understanding of computer hardware, software development, and programming languages like C/C++, Java, or Python, often supported by progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), debugging tools, and possibly coursework or certification in embedded systems or networking is beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns stand out. These skills enable you to contribute to technical projects, adapt quickly in a dynamic environment, and collaborate successfully with engineering teams.

Description
Are you a college student near Lakeland, FL looking for a year-round industrial engineering internship? Would you like to gain valuable hands-on experience and exposure to IE tools and techniques? Do you want to work on challenging projects with a Fortune 100 company? Do you want to network with professionals to develop skills beyond what you can learn in a classroom? If so, this internship may be the perfect fit for you.
The Student IE position offers a year-round, part-time internship supporting Publix Manufacturing, which includes Bakery (2), Dairy (3), Deli (1), Fresh Kitchen (3), Produce Snacks (1), and Printing Services (1) facilities. You'll be based in our support offices in Lakeland, FL and will support the local plants.
Because school comes first, we offer a flexible work schedule to accommodate your classes and coursework. Our goal is to provide the student as much exposure as possible to the day-to-day work of a full-time industrial engineer, so the student works directly with Publix IEs to assist them with projects for our manufacturing operations, including:
  • process improvement and standardization,

The temperature for the manufacturing facilities ranges from 35° to non-conditioned Florida summer temperatures. There may also be opportunities for special projects to support Lakeland warehouse operations, where temperatures range from -20° and up.
Hours of Work: We support a flexible schedule to meet the student's class schedule, and in return we require a commitment of at least 20 hours per week. Depending on the student's availability and project work, up to 40 hours per week may be available (e.g., during the summer).
Your application may have additional steps that you will need to complete in order to remain eligible for consideration. Please be sure to monitor your email, including your spam folder, on a daily basis for critical, time-sensitive emails that could require action within 24-48 hours.
Please do not use your Publix email address when applying. Once your application has been successfully submitted you will receive a confirmation email.
For this position, Publix does not and will not file a petition or application with the USCIS or Department of State on behalf of any noncitizen for any immigration-related benefit to work and/or to continue to work in the United States, e.g., an H-1B or TN petition or permanent residence.
Year End Bonus
To reward associates for their contributions to the company for the calendar year, Publix provides a Holiday Bonus in November. The bonus for this position is 8 hours of pay when a new associate joins Publix prior to July 1. There is no bonus in the first year for associates hired after July 1. In subsequent years, the bonus is equal to 8 hours' pay if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check.
