What is a computer engineering internship?

A Computer Engineering Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of computer engineering. Interns typically work alongside experienced engineers on projects involving hardware, software, or systems integration. These internships provide practical exposure to real-world engineering challenges, enhance technical skills, and help interns build a professional network. They are often a stepping stone to full-time employment in the technology industry.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a computer engineering internship?

During a Computer Engineering Internship, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects such as developing embedded systems, assisting with hardware testing, or writing and debugging code for software applications. Interns often collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers and software developers, to contribute to real-world product development. These projects are designed to provide practical experience, enhance your technical skills, and help you understand the workflow within a professional engineering environment. You may also have opportunities to present your work and receive feedback from experienced mentors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineering Intern, you need a solid understanding of computer hardware, software development, and programming languages like C/C++, Java, or Python, often supported by progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), debugging tools, and possibly coursework or certification in embedded systems or networking is beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns stand out. These skills enable you to contribute to technical projects, adapt quickly in a dynamic environment, and collaborate successfully with engineering teams.

Full-time, Internship

Posted 4 days ago

Job description

Arm technology powers billions of devices, and our goal is to find students who want to help build what comes next! Our intern program would suit candidates with interest across engineering โ€” from the hardware inside the chip to the software and tools that bring it to life.

What you could be doing?

Internships span several areas, with some projects crossing more than one:

Hardware & Chip Design โ€” Work with digital logic, RTL, FPGA, circuits, physical design or semiconductor technology.

Testing & Validation โ€” Test and debug technology through simulation, automation, test environments or lab work.

Systems & Performance โ€” Explore architecture, workloads and system behavior through modeling, simulation and benchmarking.

AI & Machine Learning โ€” Develop or optimize AI/ML solutions and apply technologies such as LLMs and agentic AI.

Software & Tools โ€” Build software, automation and engineering tools using C/C++, Python, Linux, embedded systems or CI/CD.

Technical Enablement โ€” Help developers and partners succeed with Arm through coding, technical problem-solving, research and communication.

Technical Product & Programs โ€” Help shape and deliver technical products and programs through strategy, data, planning, customer insights and cross-functional coordination.

We are looking for individuals who:

Are currently enrolled in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD program in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or another relevant technical or quantitative field. Some opportunities may require a specific degree level, area of study or technical background.

We're interested in students who enjoy technology, problem-solving, collaboration and continuous learning. Relevant experience can come from coursework, labs, research, personal projects, hackathons, student organizations, previous internships or other hands-on work.

Qualities that will help your application stand out:

Experience in every area isn't expected. We're interested in examples of:

  • Building, testing, debugging, analyzing, modeling or improving something technical.
  • Applying programming, hardware, AI/ML, data, simulation or other engineering tools.
  • Solving problems, learning new technology and collaborating effectively with others.

As part of the application, we'll ask about interests, experience and technologies used. We'll review those responses alongside the resume to match candidates with available opportunities.

We encourage early applications as we review them on a first come/first served basis.

Arm internships require you to be currently enrolled in a college or university degree program and returning to your studies after completing your internship.

Please note we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role. Applicants must have the right to work in the country where the internship is based, without relying on sponsorship by Arm, for the full duration of the internship.

In Return:

Working on interesting new projects with leaders in the field is exciting, but we also know how important it is to receive support. That's why throughout your internship, you can expect regular feedback and development opportunities, social activities to connect with your peers, an end of internship celebration. #getreadytogrow
